Reason why.. my son is in 5th grade they actually started in 3rd. hes in private school dont know if its a private thing but this week its frogs. He comes home and says the sciene teacher said that some students have gotten stress and depression from disecting. I started laughing but thinking wow kinda young. Fetal pigs are next.
I remember doing this in high school. They dont have to do the disection if they dont want to. but i thought this was kinda young.
Re: NTR: Do you remember when you started disecting in science?
I think I was in HS.
I would have had a fit if I was asked to do it in 3rd grade. That is way too young IMHO.
It was 7th grade. I had earth science in 6th and chemistry in 8th, so biology would've been 7th. But I went to a math/science magnet school. I know DH did not dissect until high school.
A fetal pig? Really?! Our grand finale was a frog and I thought that was bad enough! 3rd grade is much too young, IMO. Even if it's only because they shouldn't be handling those sharp instruments at 8/9 yo. O_O
Seventh grade. Worm, frog and crayfish.
I didn't do a fetal pig until college, in zoology class as part of my biology major. Doing a fetal pig in elementary school seems kind of like a waste to me, if that makes sense. I think it shows some disrespect to the animal to have elementary kids ripping it apart.
I did a few little things in 8th grade. The rest (frog, fetal pig, etc.) was in high school.
Junior High, possibly 7th or 8th grade? But we only did worms and insects.
I didn't dissect a fetal pig until college!!! That seems like alot for a 5th grader!

Sheep's eye dissected by the teacher in 5th grade
Frogs and earthworms dissected in class by students in 6th grade.
Didn't do any other dissecting after that.
7th grade: nurse shark
8th grade: frog and worm
11th grade: cat.
Yes, you read that correctly. And of course, I had to get the dead cat that looked exactly like my own cat at home. I sobbed the entire time.

7th grade: worms, crawfish, and frogs
10th grade: fetal pig
I teach 8th grade science. We do chicken wings and sheep hearts.
