Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Swim Class, Congested Baby

Last week I dropped some $$ on a "Mommy and Me" swim class for Dyl and I.  We sing songs and splash around in a heated indoor pool.  Last week the pool was warm, but DS was still shivering at the end of the class. His feet were tinted blue too.

This week he developed a cough and runny nose (he's had this on and off for a month due to a cold that keeps circulating our house... his father has the same cough.)  No fever, no real "cold" other than congestion.

1) think its okay to go to swim class tomorrow? I'd hate to miss one since there are only 6 left.

2) think he should wear a onesie with his trunks in the pool? Im not sure if the wet onsie would keep him warmer or colder... what do you think?

Re: Swim Class, Congested Baby

  • I've taken my kids to kiddie swimming lessons too.  The always end up shivering and blue no matter how warm the pool is (and it feels plenty warm to me!)

If you decide to take him, don't put anything other than his suit on.  A cotton onsie will make him colder.

I'm sure your kid will be fine in the pool, but you might get some dirty looks from the other parents if he is hacking and snotting.

  • If it's a mild cold and he has no fever, I would still take him.

Do you bring him in the pool before the class starts? Our instructor tells us not to, because babies get cold after about a half an hour, and if you go in before class starts, the baby will want to be out of the water before class ends.

Bring big fluffy towels with you, and if your gym has one, leave one in the sauna to warm. When class is over, wrap the baby up in it to warm him up.

The onsie won't do much I don't think, since it will be wet too.

  • Em was a little congested before one class and I think the chlorine actually helped her, I say go for it!

  • C has had a cough in the morning for weeks.  It is from post-nasal drip at night, and no matter what I do, I can't get rid of the cough.

Last week we are at Swim Lessons and she coughed a little while splashing around.  THe other 3 Moms went to the other side of the pool and would not come near me or C.  I felt like a leper - but oh well.  She does not have the flu and is not contagious, so I will keep going.  If they want to avoid me that is up to them.

I say take him to class - but only wear his trunks - no onesie.
