Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone Muslim?

Our nanny is Muslim and I'd like to tie her "holiday" gift to the appropriate holiday (if there is one). I don't want to come right out and ask her.

(Pardon my ignorance BTW).

Also, anyone have any good ideas for a great nanny / daycare provider gift?

The two main muslim holidays are the two Eids.  One ends the month of Ramamdan, and one is before it.

The greeting for Eid is "Eid Mubarak"

Most of the regular, non-meat items you'd give a daycare provider would be appropriate for a Muslim.

  • I am not Muslim, so can't help you there, but a great gift is a monetary "tip" of either her weekly salary or, ideally, twice her weekly salary (if you can afford it). I would also give her a heartfelt card. And please, no pictures of your child. :)
  • hahahaha.. i love the typo in the title.  i'm thinking "i'm a muslin? Am I like sheery fabric?"
  • two that pop into my head that my kids celebrate are Ramadan and Eid.  Just be sure you don't get her food for Ramadan as it is a fasting holiday!

  • I always give cash for the 'big' holiday. I figure that the teachers / nannies don't make all that much money and they could use some extra to buy gifts for others or to spend on themselves.
  • If your question is whether there is a Muslim equivalent to Christmas or Hanukkah around the same time then no.  The time for Ramadhan always changes.  If you would like to give a gift around the holidays, I would call it an "end of year" gift or something to that effect.

LOL.  I'm actually quite the optimist! I was just thinking of Christmastime.  Sorry, it's getting late in the day.  Smile

  • Thanks everyone. My question was too vague. I really should have asked if a wintertime gift was appropriate or if there is a particular gift-giving holiday in Islam that I just didn't know about. Obviously I missed Ramadan this year (we just started with her in the middle of it and I never thought of Ramadan as a gift-giving holiday, though I did give her a loaf of squash bread to break the fast). So, a year-end gift of cash in a heartfelt winter-themed card it is.

I hadn't thought about the photo of my kid, but good point! When I was a nanny I got a framed photo of the boy for Christmas and remember thinking "um, am I supposed to put this in my living room...?" I;d forgotten all about that!!
