Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

question about mmr vaccine

My ds will be one in dec and I am thinking that I want to delay his mmr vaccine and give it to him when hes closer to 2 yrs old, of course this is becuase of talking to many people and getting all kinds of "advice". I was just wondering if you guys delayed and if not how did your lo react to it? TIA

Re: question about mmr vaccine

  • no reaction at all to it.

this isn't about autism, is it?

  • Didn't delay, and DD had no reaction.  What reasons do you have for delaying?
  • My DSS will get his at his 15 month appt.  Our pedi doesn't give it at 12 months. I don't plan on delaying.  What are your reasons?
  • we waited til 2.

thats when our pedi does it.

  • No not necessarily, I also heard its too much for him to handle at young age, I am a hairsdresser so you know ppl sit in your chair and start telling you stuff and your mind spins lol.

  • DS just got it at his 15-mo appt and he hasn't had any reactions. He got it along with the Hib and H1N1 vax.

We did delay the chicken pox vaccine because he's not in DC.

  • He will be getting his second h1n1 shot at 1 yr so I wanted to wait a little bit for mmr.
  • If about autism.  My pedi has a son who is autistic.  She thinks autism is genetic.  Her husband is 1 of 8 and she thinks 2 of he 8 are autistic, (mildly at that).  I asked her, "honestly if you had another would you vaccinate" this was at 3 month apt.  She said absolutely.  As a mother with an autistic child she said she now sees sign that she didn't pick up on, even as a pediatrician.  My pedi is a private practice, only doctor open 7 days (been on her own since DS was born) I took her word.  at 3 months she said she could tell he was fine.  Others may flame but I trust her.
  • We did at 15 months (this is when our pedi does it). My DS had a reaction to it...a very rare one and I had a hard time getting anyone to acknowledge it for a while. However, it went away and I can't see any reason why the same thing wouldn't have happened if he got it at 2, 3, 15, etc. Where I live, I can't logically assume my DS won't be exposed to those viruses, so I don't regret my decision.
  • Our pediatrician does the MMR at the 15 month appointment along with some others. We never do more than 2 vaccines at one time so we held off on the MMR until 17 months. I also made sure my son wasn't sick at all during the time he got it.

FWIW - I don't think there is any problem with delaying vaccines. We will get most vaccines but not necessarily when the doctor has them scheduled.

  • no delay, no reaction, no basis re:  autism (I worked w/autistic kids and this is a major pet-peeve as all these kids had signs way before they had been vac'd)

good idea. its not wise to vax new things together in my opinion (and pedi's)

  • I think I am going to delay until 2.

I work with a early childhood school psychologist whose daugher at 15 months got the MMR shot and was never the same.  She started seizing, not sleeping and screaming.  Now at 2, this child still has horrible seizures and sleeps maybe 4 hours a night.  When she is not sleeping she is screaming and crying for no reason.  The doctors are stumped.  They don't know if this is autism spectrum or something else.  My co-worker doesn't think the vax caused this at all, but this child was never the same after it. I don't think the vax caused this, but maybe it was already there and the vax brought it out.

I don't know. But hearing this and seeing what she has to go through everyday scared the crap out of me.
