I just commented on this in another thread... i think it's scary that people who are having children are stereotyping like this. To be able to fully teach your children that everybody is equal, you yourself must feel the same way imo.. Really how many times have you looked through a baby name book and said, "oh I can't pick that name because it sounds like a white trash name"

I'm not going to lie, some names do reflect badly on the parents. I see some spellings, as well as some over-the-top outrageous names, and they do make it seem that the parents are uneducated or are oddly gimmicky. Not that I see myself as the militant spelling police, but it does frustrate me when parents brush off legitimate concerns about how a name or spelling comes off to others. I don't like to be rude, but I do feel a bit sorry for the kids that get stuck with poorly thought-out names.
That being said, I totally agree that some comments are way off-base. I see what people are getting at when they say "white trash", but I think there are more appropriate things to say if a name carries such a connotation. It is innappropriate. (Same goes for comments like "skanky" and "stripper name.") I also think that if people made other derogatory race-related comments, people would be outraged.
Yea I don't think any name is really able to be stereotyped-as so many people use family names, cultural names, etc. I think the only names that I have a problem with are those that are totally off base, like those that a lot of the movie stars use (i.e. Pilot Inspektor, Bronx Mowgli, etc.)
Of course, there are some people that think naming their children after their favorite food, *leisure* activity, or health issue is appropriate. My mom works at a school that has two brothers named:
O'rangejello (pronounced O-Rahn-chel-O) and..
L'imejello (pronounced Li-MAY-chel-o)
My mom has a friend who works in a sister school in the district. A girl in her LD resource class has the name of
Marijuana Pepsi...they *affectionately* call her Mary Jane. *gag*
And I mentioned before on another thread that I had a friend who worked at a planned parenthood and had a client name her baby Chlamydia because when she heard the doctor use the *name* it sounded "pretty".
So, I am really open to most names-I can live with Apple, Poet, Ever, etc..but those just mentioned make me cringe )

If a name has certain connotations, it's fair to point them out as long as you are not insulting anyone in the process.

This. KtB0605, you REALLY have a connection to all of those urban myth names??? Really?? I wish people would just say, "...that's like the person who named her son o'ranjello...." instead of lying to personalize it by claiming they know the person somehow (and it seems to always be a mom's school or an aunt's health clinic, lol).

This....especially since it's L'emonjello and not L'imejello. And the Chlamydia story is from the days the doc had to leave the house and couldn't deliver the baby, but left his medical book so the father-to-be could do it. They found the name in the book.

I don't agree. My aunt wanted to name her little girl Cinnamon, but my mom kept harping on how it sounded like a name of another race and would not let up. Eventually, my aunt caved and named her little girl Erica. Now that she's in her teens, she looks more like a Cinnamon...with the brownish red hair and slightly tanned skin. I was never a fan, but I think Cinnamon would've fit her better...not to mention, since I started TTC my aunt has expressed regret about naming her what everybody else wanted to name her. I sometimes wonder if mothers have an intuition when it comes to what name will fit their child.
That being said, the post in question only asked if you thought of the car. There are certain names that I associate with certain ethnic groups or social classes. And I'll tell you my associations if you ask for an opinion.

Oh man, 3 urban myths rolled into ONE FAMILY?! It's just too much.
I have no problem with a name being called a "stripper name". I don't know much about strippers, but I'm assuming that they chose (or are given) their stripper names to make them sound more appealing/sexy. So I don't really understand why telling someone on here that their name choice sounds like a stripper name is offensive-all they are saying is that the name sounds pretty outrageously sexy (in an icky way). If I were considering a name that would fit this description, I would certainly want all of you to tell me.
I guess my problem is with the phrase "white trash". It's horrible in this day and age that we call people trash. People, no matter their color, socioeconomic situation, background, religion, etc, are NOT trash. This thinking is what has led to slavery, oppression, and genocide.
I agree that noboby should use the term "white trash". It is completely classless. PERIOD.
If you argue that using this description is ok because certain names are associated with certain races, that is ridiculous!! Couldn't you just say "white" or "black", Caucasion or African American or Hispanic? Ignorance at its best.......

While names dont determine if someone is trashy...there is PLENTY of white trash out there. The name doesnt determine whether or not someone is trash, the person does.

You really think people are TRASH? As in garbage? Like they should be thrown out, collected in a truck, buried, or burned?
I see what you mean about the term "white trash". I've seen people use the terms "trashy", "redneck", "hillbilly". Do you think these are more acceptable terms?
I'm not being snarky, just honestly curious. I think they get the point across without actually saying "white trash".

Honestly, yes. I find "redneck" or "hillbilly" more acceptable.
4. A person or group of people regarded as worthless or contemptible
And also here is what my American Heritage Dictionary (Third Edition) lists as one of the definitions for trash:
3. A person or group held in contempt.
Is it the nicest adjective or word around to describe a name or a person or a group? No. Does it mean that people who use the word think that all "trashy" people should be burned or discarded or buried or thrown away? No. I think to say that is just a bit of a stretch.

My name is Candy and everybody tells me it's a so called "stripper" name. I don't care though. I never have, even when i was growing up. I have NEVER been turned down for a job because of my name. Every job I have applied for, I got. And I have had a very successful life IMO. I have a great loving family, wonderful marriage and I love my job. And I am very greatful of my named being different. I could guarentee there weren't any other Candys in the room with me, even at college there wasn't. (I know there are others with the name, just not that common.) I LOVE my name and who cares if somne people think it is a "stripper" name.
But in that definition it says worthless people. I don't really think of people as being worthless. I also don't agree with grouping an ENTIRE group of people together as contemptible. And let's face it, when we use the term "white trash" we are referring to people in certain situations or with certain backgrounds. I don't think that's very fair. It's saying that a group of people that may be in a situation beyond their control are not worth respecting.

In general, I agree with you. Prejudices aren't fair or nice or right. But I will admit to having them on occasion. I personally don't use the term "white trash" but I have definitely used "trashy" as an adjective - but I'm an equal opportunist, I think anyone of any race can be trashy I have used it to describe clothes, names, people, style, whatever. It doesn't mean that I think there should be some sort of "trash" police who go and burn and bury everyone and everything I deem trashy, which is what the OP seemed to think.

Yea, I didn't think so.
I don't know if you know this, but the dictionary has more than one definition for "trash."
Here is a link:
https://dictionary.reference.com/browse/trash
Good lord...this post is hysterical.
You are arguing over semantics, OP. And being so literal it's ridiculous. LOL.
I was thinking the same thing! Especially when she said that hillbilly or redneck are far more acceptable. Isn't the intent the same with all those descriptions?
Exactly. Apparently I missed the list of acceptable insults.
