Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Late talkers?

DS is 16.5 months old and still not saying any words!  He makes lots of sounds but just can't seem to put things together.  He still won't even say mama!  I'm starting to get a little worried but I know every child develops differently.

Anyone else have late talkers?  My friend's DH didn't talk till he was 3 and he's now a neurosurgeon so maybe DS is going to be a genius!

Re: Late talkers?

  • My DD is 19 months and still not talking much.  She babbles all.day.long though. Still won't say mama either.  I've talked to my friend whose a speech therapist and she said not to worry.  My cousin didn't really talk until he was 4 and he too is so super smart and a surgeon.

  • Don't worry- it will happen.

Up until last month My DD says mama and dada and then just makes a million and three sounds. However- in one week she came out with at least ten words. They all do it on their own time.

  • DS finally got his words a week before his 18 month appt where the Pedi was going to discuss EI if he had no words.  He is 20 months now and is starting to string words.  not clear, but it is exciting.  I think come kids just save it all up and explode.

  • I thought my baby was going to be a talker...she started babbling everything under the sun & never met a consonant she didn't like.  Then she said her first word at about 1, "duck".  She then said a couple other things where you can tell she's trying to say the word, like "turtle" is "tur-uh" or the like.

Then, she kinda stopped.  I almost feel like she regressed, she won't say "tur-uh" anymore.  She babbles like crazy still, and will say "mama" only when she's whining (gotta love that).  Otherwise everything and anything is some variation of "dur" or "duh".  All I can figure is she finally learned to walk, and now exploring has taken over her priorities.  So, we'll see.

  • DS is not a huge talker but he does have like 20-ish words he uses regularly.  His little friend who is a week older (so nearly 19 months) still doesn't have any words.  His mom was freaking out but the pedi at his 18 month appt was totally ok with it.  Does he have other ways to communicate with you (like does he shake his head yes or no when you ask a question or clearly understand things you tell him to do)?  My friend's pedi said as long as her son was doing things like that, she think he's just a late talker.

  • Late talker here too.  DS has said about 5 words or so, but lately he won't say any of them.  Just babble babble babble, point and grunt and point and whine...  I'm kind of getting worried, and I know the pedi is going to recommend EI at his 18 mo appt in a couple of weeks, so I guess we'll see what they say.

  • DD doesn't talk a lot either.  She is amazingly physical though...she does the stairs like a 4 year old (we only use the gate when we want to keep her upstairs) and she is walking, running, dancing, climbing etc.  A lot of times, when kids are super physical they are later talkers because so much energy is focused on physicality.

We've had an EI evaluation and she qualifies and we're going to do speech therapy, but I am not worried about her.  She is clearly intelligent...hell, Einstein didn't talk until he was 4.
