Spelling ? - Frederick

Our little one has a name, but I'm uncertain about how to spell his mn. It will be after my mom/grandpa. My mom's maiden name is Fredricks. Our last name starts with an 's', so that will sound silly. We've decided to drop the 's'. Would you keep the spelling as it is Fredrick or do the more traditional Frederick?

Re: Spelling ? - Frederick

  • When honoring someone, I think you should keep the spelling as close to possible to the real name.

  • I would do it as the last name is spelled. MIL's maiden name is Fredrich, and we're considering using that as a middle name. And we're going to spell it the way the family spells it. I see your point in removing the 's', but no reason to change the spelling otherwise!
  • Because it is a mn, Fredrick would be ok.  But I think I would still spell it Frederick.  It still honours your mom despite the spelling change.

Our baby's mn will be Matthew after my maternal grandparents whose last name was Mathews.

This. My sister named her son after my great granddad, but she gave it a youneek spelling and nobody even realizes that's who he was named after, even though it's pronounced the same.

EDIT: Besides, how often is the middle name and last name said together? Graduation, maybe. Since it's a family name, I think it would be ok to keep the 's'
