3rd Trimester

Is it possible for your cervix to close back up or "undilate"?

Tried google-ing and couldn't really find any info.  Everything was talking about after pg or during ovulation.  My OB said that it won't close back up, on Friday I was 2cm.  Today I saw another OB and he said I was barely 1cm.  I just worry that he did it wrong (don't know why I question this OB, but it just seems too good to be true that I would close, especially since my main OB said that it couldn't close).  TIA.

  • I've heard stories of cervix's closing back up. Probably not what you want to hear. Sounds like the ones I've heard of were anxiety related.

  • I never even thought of this possibility but it ..seems ..logical...?

  • To a certain extent, the measurement is subjective. With my first, I was told 4cm by one doc, 5 cm by a nurse and 3cm by another doc. Those measurements came in that order and within an hour of each other. I wouldn't worry too much. The measurements don't mean much at this point anyway.

  • Sad to say that no it can't close back up. But your measurements will all depend on the doctor. I had a team of 6 OB's & every time they did an internal some said the same thing then another would say something different. Good luck on keeping those babies cooking.

You're measured by feel and touch only. It's all up to interpretation by who is doing the exam. Some doctors can be generous, others not so much. If you want consistency, it'd be best to see the same doctor.

  • I had the same problem...and it appears to be a reliability problem between OBs.  One's 2 is another 3...and I was told when I was in the hospital for a second PTL episode, that the best teller of actual change is to have the same person check me that evaluated it to being with.  Problem being they want you to see every doctor in the practice before delivery.

For example, I have been between 3-4 for two weeks (by the same doc), and today the PA told me I was barely 3.  I think it is an interrater reliability issue:)

  • out of curiosity, why are you being checked so early?

Because they're worried about PTL.  So she wants it to close back up.

  • In Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbrith she says that your cervix can close-up or undilate, due to the sphincter law.

Like the other girls said, it's probably just different interpretations from OBs.

  • In one of the natural birth books (Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth) she tells stories of womens' cervix closing up usually due to stress/anxiety during birth.

  • The interpretation that most of you are talking about is what freaks me out.  I was told 2cm by 2 different OB's, I'm scared that I really am 2 and this doc just considers it 1.  I haven't had a chance for MY OB to check me for different reasons (today for example he had to run to do a delivery on a woman that was already at 9cm).  I hate this worrying, I wish I knew what was going to happen (even if it was delivering early, at least I'd know and could not be stressed until then).  Only 2w3d until our 36w goal.  I'll feel so much better when we get to that point.
  • Yes, it actually can. We learned about this at our last child birth class. During labor, the act of pushing before being fully dialated can actually cause your cervix to start closing.
