Can I skip a dose of antibiotics?

DS is on augmentin and it's really strong.  I think it hurts his belly at night if I give it too close to bed time.  I have been giving it to him earlier and I think it has helped.  But now we are 1/2 hour away from bed and I gave cereal an hour ago (I usually give it with cereal).

Do I give him his dose now and risk the belly ache, or wait until tomorrow morning.

  • You could call your pedi's office and ask the on-call doc.

I'm sure you are supposed to stay on schedule. However, in my totally uneducated opinion I don't think it would be terrible to wait until morning, if it really bothers him to take it at night.

  • Oh, wait, I just realized that maybe you have to give this more than once/day, therefore you really would be skipping a dose. I wouldn't do that w/out asking a doctor.

  • If it was my baby and I thought it was giving him a tummy ache, I'd just do it first thing in the am..
image Alcoholism is not determined by how much you drink or how often, but by negative consequences in your life that do not alter your drinking habits.
  • I would take it on schedule/not miss the dose. When you don't take the antibiotics according to schedule or don't finish the course, it may not fully kill all the bacteria and potentially contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Of course, I am not a doctor so really I'm talking out of my butt and might be totally wrong. Could you give it with more food and try keeping him up 30 minutes later instead?

  • You shouldn't skip a dose. There needs to be a certain level of antibiotics in his body until the infection is gone or you risk creating a resistant strain.
