Baby's scalp peeling, not cradle cap?

My baby is 4 weeks old and his scalp has been peeling for about 2 weeks and hit hair is falling out on the top. Everyone, including myself, does not think it is cradle cap. The scalp is peeling a fine, white skin. It is not thick, yellow or crusty. I have tried the shampoo for cradle cap but I think it got worse and once a section completely peels off, it starts over again. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?

  • I don't think it has to be thick, yellow or crusty in order to be cradle cap. I've heard that trying dandruff shampoo (make sure not to get it in his eyes because it burns) or put some oil on his scalp, let it sit for a while, wash his hair, and then comb it. Good luck.

  • Just leave it alone. My daughter's did the same and went away on its own in a matter of a few weeks. We live in Colorado Springs very dry climate and I think that had something to do with it. It could be the same for you?

  • It sounds like cradle cap, in which case it will clear up on its own.  DS has cradle cap started out with yellow crusty scales, but now has flaky white skin on his head.

If your DC has dry pathches elswhere on his body, it could be eczema.  In that case, try Aquaphor.
