2nd Trimester

I am so craving crab legs... Are they "safe" to eat?

There's this great seafood place about an hour away, and Dh has promised me that when I'm healthy and feeling up to it we'll go.  They have all you can eat Snow Crab legs and Dungeoness Crab legs.  Mmmmm....  I can hardly think of waiting the week or so until we can go!

So, all you can eat crab legs are ok, right?  I know some people go the whole "don't worry so much about the rules" route but I'm just curious.  I can't seem to find anywhere where it says that they're high in mercury, and it's only the one night I'll be eating them...  With all the meds I'm on for the flu I feel better watching what I'm eating - that I can control right now, and the meds I can't!

So thoughts on crab legs?

  • go for it!  they are safe in my mind

  • I hope they're ok because I ate some a week ago! If you don't see them listed anywhere as being high in mercury then I think you're safe. Enjoy!

  • I had some last night. they looked so good but I only had a couple because I could not remember the shellfish rule. I think moderation is the key, I don't think I would eat all you can eat but I'm sure a few would be fine.

  • Oh I can hardly wait.  I've been craving them for like two weeks!  We were going to go for our anniversary, but I ended up in the hospital instead...

Crab legs with drawn butter.  Oh happiness.

  • safe ...and remember everything in moderation.  most foods really are ok as long as you are not eating the "iffy" ones more than 1 x/week!

  • Sounds good to me!  I wouldn't eat them every single day, but go out and enjoy your dinner!

  • Yum yum yum, that sounds so good! :-)
  • Well, many times physicians differ in their advice to their pregnant patients, but my doctor told me that while not all seafood is bad during pregnancy, I should stay away from "bottom feeders" (i.e. crabs, shrimp, clams, etc. --> the things that creep along the ocean floor). I highly doubt one lovely meal of crab legs would do you harm, and if your doctor hasn't mentioned it to you, then perhaps it's not a huge pregnancy taboo. I just wanted to throw my two cents in on this one, though, as it's like the one bit of food advice no-no that my obstetrician mentioned to me.
  • I can't tell you how much snow crab I have eaten during this pregnancy. Eat it up! Just be sure to watch your other fish intake for the week.?

Mmmmmmmmmmm... now I want some! DH actually mentioned it today. Our anniversary is next week and I think we might do thissssss.?
