Baby Names

Julia

Julia is on our "final 4" list.
I love the name, in English.

DH is from Spain and would end up calling her "hoo-lia," which he says is a beautiful name in Spanish.   (His name is Julio, btw)

But I hate how it sounds.  I don't mind Julio, but for some reason Julia just grates on my nerves.  It would be unreasonable for me to expect DH and his family to use the English pronunciation, so I'm considering cutting it from the list.

Do you think it really sounds as awful as I think it does, or am I overreacting?

If you like Julia, do you still like "hoo-lia?"

Re: Julia

  • If you really don't like the Spanish pronunciation, I would cut it. After all, you're going to be hearing your DH and his family pronounce it that way all the time. Unless you think it might grow on you, I'd move on to a different name.

  • I would probably cut it. Mainly because I suck at narrowing names down so if even a tiny problem presents itself, the name is usually nixed.

And personally, I don't really like "hoo-lia". I dig "hoo-lio" but "hoo-lia" just sounds funny to me.

  • If you have 3 other names on your list I would definitely cut Julia, It is a beautiful name but having family say it "wrong" her whole life would get on my nerves!!

  • I love Julia. If my husband and his family were from Spain, it wouldn't bother me that they pronounce it the way they think it should be pronounced. I wonder how your daughter would pronounce her name though since her parents pronounce it differently?
  • Julia's is on our list too.  If you know it'll bug you to hea DH & his fam call her hoo-lia for the rest of your life than cut it.  It'd bug me for sure :)

  • Julia was our girl name this time around if DC#3 would of been a girl so I love the name!!  BUt I'm not crazy about the spanish version....sorry just being honest and she will forever be correcting people her whole life :(
  • Pronunciation is important. I cut two names from my list because my mom (French accent) said them wrong.

  • I went to college with a girl named Julia.  We called her "hoolia julia".

I'd cut it if I were you.

  • I'm with you, Julio is cool with the Spanish J, Julia: not so much.  I would cut it off the list, esp. since you have 3 other names you like in the running.

(And I do so love Julia with the English J..)

  • My name is Julia, and even I don't like "hoo-lia".  In Spanish class in high school, when we got to select our Spanish names, I went with  Natalia even though most people picked the Spanish equivalent to their real names, lol.
