3rd Trimester

Choosing a pediatrician

I know we should have a pediatrician picked out before the baby comes, but did anyone "interview" with any doctors beforehand? Or can I just choose a pediatrician without meeting them first? My childbirth instructor said if we have one chosen, they will come the day after delivery to examine the baby (not the in-house pediatrician). What are all of you doing?

Re: Choosing a pediatrician

  • I think we're supposed to have one who can come as soon as she's born. I think we'll check with our family practitioner and see if they will do it or refer us to someone.

  • So far I have interviewed one doctor.  I didn't really see the point to it other than, now I know what he looks like so when I see him checking on the baby I will know that's who it is.  2 of my friends use him so I am guessing I just go with him.  You never really know if you like someone until you start dealing with them in a real situation anyway.
  • you are "supposed" to interview them... but honestly, I do not have enough time to interview them. I am sure I will hop around to pediatricians after birth (just like I hopped around to OBs before birth)... so I'm just gonna pick somewhere with convienient hours for now.

  • We're going to do some "meet the doctor" visits. I have one scheduled so far.

If you don't want to interview, you should at least call the practice and ask about their hours, after hours calls, etc.

  • None of the peds around here really do interviews.  We chose ours by recommendation of my doc and of friends.  All we have to do is put his name down when we check in to the hospital, and he (or whomever is covering for him that day if he is not on call) will come by.  Then we make a follow up appt at the office.

This is pretty much what we did, too, but we chose a family practice doctor that we will all see instead of a ped.

  • I did not meet the one we chose, I know a lot of ppl do interviews. I went off a list that my OB recommends, then narrowed it down to ones that accept our insurance, then ones who were accepting new patients, and we were left with 2, so I picked the one that wasn't 30min away.
