I know my hospital says they rarely ever do them anymore, they have other techniques they try to do while you are in labor to stretch you out.. they told me its very rare to have done anymore... good luck!
I had an episiotomy with 1st daughter, didn't need one with second daughter. This was 12 and 10 years ago. My sister had one with her daughter last year, same OB group and hospital. I was there and I know they tried to get her out without the epi, but she was just not stretching any further, 3 hours pushing. A little cut and she was out. At that point you are on fire down there and you do not feel it! You don't feel the stitches happening either.
It really wasn't a huge deal for me, I even "lost a few stitches" and had to have a little repair at my 2 week post partum appt. Maybe I have a good pain tolerance, but the healing process wasn't a bad in my experience.
