Re: Episiotomy?

  • I know my hospital says they rarely ever do them anymore, they have other techniques they try to do while you are in labor to stretch you out.. they told me its very rare to have done anymore... good luck!

  • Ask Dr, to do the perineum rub while you are pushing.  That way you won't tear.
  • My doctor said they only do them in an emergency now. She  said most of the time women tear on top of having the episiotomy, so it's not helpful.

  • Your doctor might just do them.  My docs don't do it - except in very rare occasions.  You should talk to him/her about what you'd like.
  • I had an episiotomy with 1st daughter, didn't need one with second daughter. This was 12 and 10 years ago.  My sister had one with her daughter last year, same OB group and hospital. I was there and I know they tried to get her out without the epi, but she was just not stretching any further, 3 hours pushing. A little cut and she was out. At that point you are on fire down there and you do not feel it!  You don't feel the stitches happening either.

It really wasn't a huge deal for me,  I even "lost a few stitches" and had to have a little repair at my 2 week post partum appt. Maybe I have a good pain tolerance, but the healing process wasn't a bad in my experience.
