3rd Trimester

Gestational Diabetes?

Anyone have it? I took my 1 hr test yesterday and my levels were high so I have to do the 3 hr test next week. I'm just wondering if I do have it what would happen? As in what would my doc do or want me to do? Apparently my grandmother had this with all her babies and they were all 10-11 lbs. I didn't have it with DD and she was 6 lb 3 oz at 3 weeks early. I know it can lead to high birthweight babies but I"m not measuring big right now either, right on track. I've just never given it a second thought and I'm not worried right now but just wondering what would happen if I do have GD?

  • Main thing they do is make you change your diet. They want to keep your blood sugars on track. Just like if you had diabetes but you wont have it after LO is born :)

  • I have GD and in fact my fundal height is measuring 1.5 weeks behind.   I also didn't need maternity clothing until over 7 months.  All to say, your size doesn't really mean much.

You can also have it with one pregnancy and not with another.  My co-worker had it during her second pregnancy -- her 1st and 3rd were normal.

BUT the majority of women who fail the one hour pass the three hour so the odds are on your side.

If you do have it, you'll see a dietician, be given a blood glucose meter.  You'll follow the diet plan she gives you - basically eating 6 times per day and counting carbs/checking your blood sugar levels.   Most likely you would get a couple extra u/s to be sure the baby isn't getting big.   Mine is very manageable just with diet.

  • I failed the one hour test two weeks ago, but took and passed the 3 hour one on Saturday. It was a long and annoying 3hours in a waiting room but worth it to find out either way. good luck!

  • Hey why didn't you email me about this.  I can help you.  I had it last time and am "being monitored" this time too.  Call me or email.  You'll meet with a dietician, get a monitor and have to follow a specific diet.  And FWIW, DS was only 8 lbs 2 oz and went down to 7lbs 2oz at the hospital.  His sugar tested normal at birth as did mine after.
