My opinion of smokers...

I am allergic to nicotine so having someone's habit make me physically ill might have something to do with my feelings but if I meet someone and I learn that they smoke, my opinion of them drops way down.  I think it is the most wasteful, stupid thing a person can do.  I hate when I am walking to work and I get stuck behind some a-hole smoker and have to either walk slower or try to pass them...I hate seeing cigarette butts on the ground...I hate the money/time people waste on it... I think it is my biggest pet peeve.

I can't even have friends who smoke because it makes me so irrate.  So I think if I saw a pregnant woman smoking, I might yell at her like a complete out of control idiot but that is what I would do.   And because I have so many smoking co-workers I have to smell their stink EVERYDAY when they come back inside and sometimes I want to tell them not to speak to me until they hav aired themselves out.

Sorry.  Going back and reading the smoking post made me very annoyed.  I am done now.

  • Ditto to that girlfriend!

  • Smoking is just nasty. I'd rather see someone pick their nose and eat it in public than have to walk by a smoker and inhale their dirty habit.
  • Umm...thanks?Huh?

    Ick! But funny...

  • In defense of some of the people who smoke, they hate themselves for it. At least my DH does (I've never smoked), he's not proud of it and tries very hard to quite, he's still trying and the worst thing I can do is put him down for picking up again.

  • It's an addiction.  And it's sooooo hard to quit.  You obviously have no idea.  I smoked for nearly 15 years, and quit after my BFP.  I tried quitting 3 times before that, but it never stuck.  It's not allowed in workplaces, in restaurants, or even bars anymore... smokers have nowhere else to go but on the street to smoke.

I'm not smoking anymore, DH has quit, we are now officially a smoke-free household, and plan to stay that way.  But, I am not going to ostracize or judge people for it (unless they're a chainsmoking pregnant lady).  We all have our faults.  It just seems that some faults are socially acceptable and some are socially acceptable to be the basis of mocking, ostricization, and cruelty.

People need support to release themselves from their addiction, not abuse for having it.

  • Yea, I'm not a fan of smoking but I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish here.  It's not a single smoker would read this and think "wow, I really upset someone.  NOW I'm ready to quit."

There are millions of people in the world who will do things you don't agree with.  You have to let it go, otherwise you will spend every waking moment upset.

I'm sure somebody feels the exact same way about you for some dumb/stupid habit you have. Everybody has a different predisposition for becoming a smoker, staying a smoker, or not.  In the end, Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and quitting is extraordinarily difficult. Luckily you are allergic.

I find overly judgmental, close-minded, and generally uneducated people to be disgusting. Hating large groups of people only puts you in a corner a la Hitler. You can brood over whatever you'd like but taking the time to post something like this doesn't help anybody.

  • I agree to a certain extent.  I hate cigarette smoking. It makes me sick and gives me an instant headache and I do make assumptions about people because they smoke (which may or may not be true).  Heck, when I learned about Obama's smoking habit it did make me like him a little less.  I know it is not right but it just is what it is.

On the other hand I can empathize with how hard it must be to have such an addiction.  I guess it would be like someone telling me that I could not eat chocolate for 9 months.  I eat chocolate EVERY DAY; it is very much an addiction and I imagine that I would really struggle with having to give it up.  There are alot of things that I do that is not beneficial for my baby like drink soda, eat sugary foods, no exercise, etc. so I really can't cast a stone.

  • I'm totally not a smoker nor am I a fan of smoking.  However, your post comes off quite rude.  Smoking is an addiction.

  • I hate smoking as well, but in the defense of the PP I think she was showing how dangerous it is and the lesson she learned from it. I think its awesome she was brave enough to post something as private and traumatic as that.
  • I'm a former smoker who stopped when I found out I was pregnant. I still have some powerful cravings but I don't smoke because I know the risks and I want to do everything I can to have a healthy baby.

But for you to have such a low opinion of smokers is kind of weird to me because you might do or say something that irritates the hell out of someone and I'm sure they dont think any less of you.

Sorry someone giving us information about a smoking incident made you so mad but I think that woman was very brave to come out like she did and when I think of smoking again I'm going to think of her and not you so that I will get back on track.

These two sentences exactly! What was the point of your post? Everybody does something that will drive someone else crazy.

  • The post was a vent... obviously.

I believe I am allowed to feel this way.  Yes it is an addiction, so don't start in the first place!!! Come on.  I can understand people in older generations who became addicted before anyone knew it was so bad for you but someone in my generation to start to smoke?  How can you make that decision KNOWING that is highly addictive and bad for you (and me!!)

I find overly judgmental, close-minded, and generally uneducated people to be disgusting. Hating large groups of people only puts you in a corner a la Hitler. You can brood over whatever you'd like but taking the time to post something like this doesn't help anybody.

I don't understand how I am close-minded (um..it is a gross habit, yes I am not open to it) and uneducated (how am I not educated?  I gained my annoyance of smoking from living in the world).  I hardly think my smoking vent equates me to Hitler- but that is pretty hilarious you compared me to him- are you kidding me??

So I am lucky that I am allergic?  Well I am not allergic to heroine or alcohol but I don't smoke crack and I don't drink that much because alcoholism runs my huge Irish family.   I would never want to be addicted to anything, so I stay away from addictive substances- not that hard.

  • Nice that it's hard to quit and all. But I too am allergic and have asthma. It really pisses me off that I can't walk about on the streets without coughing all over the place and feeling sick for hours sometimes. And I want to scream at the people who smoke near running trails. THANKS!

  • I don't think anyone is denying that smoking is a terrible habit. I think what's hitting the wrong nerve is that it's being used here as a justification to make snap judgements about a person with no other prior knowledge about that person. Not cool.

Fact: Smoking is bad for you.

    Myth: Smokers are terrible people.
    Myth: Smokers are uneducated.
Myth: You are a better person than all smokers.

There is absolutely nothing substantial about judging someone based on a habit. If this is how you choose to see people, you're going to miss out. You'll always be better or worse. Have fun with that.
