Does anyone think that people are going to find their name choices "boring"? My sister-in-law gave her kids really unique names, i.e. Maverick, so I think our friends and family are expecting the same thing from us.
We aren't telling anyone our name until after baby arrives, so our close family members have been offering lots of guesses. They keep suggesting things like Cash, Scotch, and Mac. We're going with James, which is a name I absolutely adore, but not nearly as unique as their guesses. I just think they are expecting something a little more "out there."
I wouldn't dream of changing our name since DH and I are both very happy with it. I just wondered if anyone else is in the same situation.

Boring usually means that the kid won't be stuck having to spell it for everyone for the rest of his/her life and it won't get their butt kicked on the playground.
Our "test" for a name was could we imagine our son/daughter going into a job interview and introducing themselves. If the name wouldn't get them laughed at, it was a good one. Or, we tried to imagine them using it on the phone with a client. Something like that. You have to think of it as a name for a 35 year old, not just a baby. Maverick might be "cute" now, but will it get him taken seriously later in life?
Boring can be good! Maverick is just weird, IMO. And Scotch?? Are they kidding?
BTW, James is a great name. Classic and strong.
James is a great name! Sometimes, it's cool to be normal.
I imagine my kid being introduced in a variety of settings--i.e. at an interview, meeting their first date's parents, at a party, on stage, answering roll call at school. I don't want them to have the same name as everyone else, but I want something that has a bit of substance and versatility. Maverick, Cash, and Scotch don't sound like someone I'd want my girl to date! Trixie would have to have an unbeatable record to be taken seriously at a law firm. No, James isn't the showiest name, but it sounds strong, friendly, and dependable--qualities I want people to associate with my kid.
This.
I love James!
I'm pretty sure James will be thanking you when he's an adult and has an adult name to match his adult-status. I don't think Maverick or Scotch will thanking their parents
The test we use is whether the name is believable as "Supreme Court Justice ______". It's not fair to the kid, b/c he could be a GENIUS, but I would laugh at the thought of Supreme Court Justice Maverick Smith. Do you see him getting the job? (Of course if he's QUALIFIED he could, but you get my point.)
James is a wonderful name.
IMHO Maverick, Cash and Scotch are ridiculous names. I far, far prefer James to those other choices. Additionally, it's your child and you don't owe anyone anything in terms of what name you and your husband choose.

No offense, but your family has horrible taste in names. Cash, Scotch, and Mac?
James is a great name. Your child will thank you for not naming him Scotch. Trust me.
It's fun to make crazy suggestions for names. me and DH have thrown all sorts of ideas at each other.
But the name we pick will be a solid, anyone would be able to make a good stab at how to spell it or how to say it.
It doesn't matter what others expect, and honestly they're probably just enjoying the fun of making interesting suggestions. It's really what you and DH want.
