Does anyone not have a budget for Christmas?

I have no idea what we will be spending.  It's not b/c the $ is unlimited, but just if I see something someone will like, I buy it.  I started buying gifts last January and am not done yet.  I just pick things up here and there.  I have no idea how much we will spend total, but would guess it is somewhere in the middle of the poll post below.

Re: Does anyone not have a budget for Christmas?

  • Yeah, not really.  We try to shop deals and be as thrifty as possible.  I generally spend the same each year on nieces, nephews and extended family.  DH and DD are flexible depending on what they really want and need.

  • generally, I pick specific "big" gifts for each child and bargain shop as best I can... I'll pick up small gifts here and there gradually... like a barbie at the grocery store, or a hotwheel at target or whatever.  so yeah, I guess when I answer those.  I spend around the same amount each year.

  • We don't have a budget, I shop year round for the kids for both Birthdays and Christmas. To me that is why even if we do spend $500 per child for christmas over 12 months we are not looking at a whole big chunk at once.

  • we don't have one either. We just buy stuff we like if we can afford it. We usually get lucky with sales. Neither of us like shopping or have the time for it, so most of it ends up happening in Nov-Dec anyway.

  • nope....no budget here.  I don't even have a clue WHAT to get DD, so not sure.  DS has a birthday right after Christmas too, so we will see.  Oh, and I haven't even started shopping yet.  I really need to change my strategy next year and pick up things throughout the year rather than do it all and spent a boatload all at once.  Especially since we have to pay our lovely real estate taxes in December too. Ugh.

  • I wouldn't say that we 'budget' for Christmas....we get what we can afford & what want everyone to have.  That said, I'd never think of going out and spending $1000 or more total - or anywhere close to that (not that there's anything wrong with that, just not necessary IMO). There's more to Christmas than presents, and my husband is famous for telling people it's "not their birthday."  Also, this year we are doing homemade gifts for the grandparents, and otherwise buying for kids only.
