3rd Trimester

To induce or Not to induce????

I went to my 39 week appointment yesterday and there was no progress to really report.  I am actually dilating backwards...lol.  So the subject of induction was brought up and I agreed to an induction next Thursday.  I was happy when I left the office, but I am starting to have second thoughts.

First and foremost if I take that induction date I won't get paid at all in December, because I don't have enough leave. Second, DD was an induction and I just feel that in hindsight that was the worlds most medicated birth known to man.  There was nubain, cervidil, pitocin, and epi.  I would just like to cut down on the need for all that this time around.

On the flip side, I have been googling inductions and some of the responses have me scared that if I let my baby go to 41 weeks he'll be stillborn and I am horrified reading that.  I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't take the induction and something ended up happening because I waited.

So I just wanted to hear some opinions from you ladies on what you would do....sorry this is so long!

Re: To induce or Not to induce????

  • I would induce, but I had a fabulous (only pit and an epi) induction with DD.

  • You of course have to do what you want to do and what you and your doctors feel is best for your baby.

If you would like to hear a successful induction birth story at 41.5 weeks, its in my bio.

  • Really, It's up to you. I would prefer to not be induced because a lot of inductions end up in unnecessary c-sections. Hopefully, your LO will decide it's ready to come before the induction, then you won't have to make any decisions!

Hey now, you should know better not to google that sh!t!!

Honestly, since your last induction experience was not pleasant, I'd wait it out, at least til 41 weeks. Plus, I can understand the money issues, that's a hard one. Could you make it to 41 weeks financially? That's what I'd do, if I were in your shoes.

  • I am anti-induction unless it becomes medically necessary. I do not consider going past your due date to be medically necessary as many due dates are incorrect to begin with. I do understand that there is a risk b/c of meconium if you allow yourself to go too far past due, but I don't feel that your due date is the time to induce. I will be induced only if I go more than a week past my due date and my doctor recommends it, or if any other unexpected complications arise that make it medically necessary... for example high blood pressure or if the baby stops growing.

  • I plan to induce with this baby, but only if my Bishop's score is favorable. Otherwise, I will wait it out. Starting the process with some progress generally works out better.
  • I am in the same boat as you, and have my appointment this afternoon and I know we will tak induction. I have had zero progress so far.

Do what is best for you and your LO. I am sure your Dr. will push it back a few days if you are more comfortable waiting, for work reasons and health reasons. Take time to think about it and don't be afraid to call your Dr. and talk with him more about it. Good luck with your decision.

  • If this was my first I most likely wouldn't induce. But with 2 little ones at home, both of their birthdays around the corner, if I get the option to induce and pick a date, I would do it. On the other hand, I went into labor on my own with the other 2 and it is fun to experience the whirlwind of all that.

  • i hear your pain. i'm waiting till a few days short of 42 weeks to induce. google has a list of just as scary facts for induction too... so, it's a tough choice.

so far i have had good movement and passed my non stress tests, so i am just waiting, but of course i get nervous from time to time, wondering if i made the right decision. i sit here and wait, and google and surf this board... but babies are typically born between 38 and 42 weeks, and really we should be given a "due month" rather than a "due date".

i see a few signs that this is progressing. VERY slowly. i am just trying to be patient and assuming my due date was off

  • Thanks for all the opinions ladies!  I think I am going to wait it out.  I am going to ask the office if I can have a non stress test on the 11th and if everything looks good, then I will wait.  I will be 41 weeks on the 16th so I know if I don't go by then, I will probably be induced that next day and that is something I could live with mentally and financially.
  • i was forced to induce due to worries about my LO's size, but inducing does not doom you to a super-medicated birth. i was adament about going natural, and the only drugs i had were pitocin (obviously), and one small dose of nubain once my labor started going into the 24th hour and i had contractions with no breaks.
