3rd Trimester

Non stress tests...

My ankles have been really swollen and my bp was a little elevated today so my OB said he wants to do an NST every week from here on out,  My question...has anyone had one and if so, how long did they last (I have read anywhere between 20-60 min)?  I am not sure if I should let work know I will be later than usual (or if I should bring something to do!) and of course I forgot to ask today!  TIA...

Re: Non stress tests...

  • I had them 3 times a week toward the end with DS for elevated BP, and they ranged anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and a half. It depended on how active he was and what his heart rate was doing. If they got the movement and accelerations they needed in 20 minutes, it was done. If he was sleepy and didn't move a lot, more time was spent trying to wake him up. So I guess I'm saying it just depends.  HTH.

  • It actually does...thanks! Is it possible to read or is it better if I just lay there and wait!?
  • I had one yesterday, only took about 30 minutes.  Take a bottle of juice is my advice.

  • I just had one today and also have to go every week. Mine took a good hour because one baby was too active and kept kicking its monitor away. It really depends on what kind of mood your baby is in. Also, I was able to read if I wanted to but some offices have you push a button or something when you feel movement. I would totally bring a book just in case and tell your work that you might be late.

  • I have to have one once a week and sometimes they really only last 20 mins but other times I have been there for two hours.  One time the baby had the hiccups for 25 minutes so none of that time counted because the heart rate wasn't being picked up.  My hospital has tvs in the room, so I just watch tv, but you could always bring a book or your phone and just text a bunch of people :)  Good luck :)
  • I never read or anything because I'd lose track and forget to push the button when I felt movement.

  • My office has a VHS player with kids tapes and magazines, so I read theirs. Bring something to drink - the noise of digestion will wake them up, and I also eat something right before I go in. Empty your bladder right before.

28-32w were 20 mins or less. 33w his HR wasn't accelerating the way they wanted and I was hooked up for over an hour and then had an ultrasound to be sure all was well.

  • I've been getting them weekly since 30 weeks. Mine are always atleast an hour, and my LO is always pretty active.

They hook up the heart rate monitors and I sit there on that for about 20-30mins. I dont have to push a button because they have an extra monitor strapped on that monitors movement. Then afterward they do an ultrasound and watch his movement and make sure he is doing practice breathing.

  • I have them twice a week, for the past 4 weeks, and they typically last an hour, but have been as long as 2 1/2 hours.  It all depends on what your body is doing and how much LO is moving.  The longest one was because LO was napping and I was having BH.  I would recommend bringing something to do and let work know you will be late.  I've learned not to plan anything after my NST's.
