3rd Trimester

Does your doctor tell you how big LO is measuring?

Just wondering... My doctor just tells me that I'm "right on track" but never says how much LO weighs or anything like that...

Will that come later?

  • Same.. he measures my uterus and says I am right at 36 or whatever week I'm on.. I'm thinking the baby weight comes soon.
  • I had a growth u/s at about 35w b/c of GD- that was the first time I'd heard a weight guesstimate. I get another u/s next week, so we'll see how much she's grown in that time! Estimates are generally off though, so even if they give you one, I wouldn't put much stock in it!
  • Mine tells me how I'm measuring... last time I was measuring a week behind.  If they did tell you how much LO would weight, then it would just be an estimate, and I don't put very much stock in it, they can be off by quite a bit.

  • My doctor doesn't tell me anything unless I specifically ask. I kind of like it that way. Ignorance is bliss!
  • I get growth ultrasounds because of diabetes, but I don't think the doc can tell how much LO weighs just by examing you. I think it has to be done through ultrasound. I don't know though.

  • At 38 weeks my doc estimated the baby was around 7 lbs, then last week he said the "upper 7 lb range."  He usually tells me after my internal and feeling around my belly.  We'll see how accurate he is...

  • My doctor measures me basically just for fun (twins kind of break the "rules").  But that's just measuring my belly.  As far as weights of the babies themselves I agree with a PP in that I believe it needs to be done by ultrasounds.  When I get growth scans done on the twins, they measure the heads and bellies of the babies and are somehow able to give me an estimate of their weight.  However, I have been told that the estimate that we are being given is usually more than what they will actually weigh.   Hope that helps!
  • They can't tell you what it weighs.  All they can be certain is how big the uterus is measuring.

  • I thought I was the only one. My doctor just says, you look good, and baby looks good.
  • My doctor stopped telling me. We know he's big (like 10lbs) but we're in a wait and see mode. If he comes naturally and fits through me, then he'll be born naturally. If he gets stuck, then emergency c-section it is.

  • My doctor doesn't tell me anything! She only physically measured me once and that was at my 28 week appt.  I wish she would tell me something!  I guess I should ask next time...
  • My doctor just tells me how big I'm measuring.  She doesn't say anything about the size of the baby.  She does say his heartbeat/rate is good.

  • Today was my first day and the doc said 33 after putting measuring tape on my belly....and i was like...oookay lol whatever that means!!

    Can anyone explain?
