Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Why are you baptizing?

Hi ladies,

I'm usually over at thenest, but have a question for those of you who are baptizing your babies.

I'm currently getting my masters at a protestant seminary and lately we've been studying the sacrament of baptism.  I understand the theological implications of baptism, but I also know some families who are only moderately or slightly religious have their infants baptized. Not that I would object to it- but I am curious to see the different reasons or motivations of different families.

 Why are you baptizing?

Re: Why are you baptizing?

  • I was not baptized until I was 12. My parents raised us christian, but left it open and when we became a certain age it was our decision if we wanted to be or not.

That is probably what I will do with my LO.

  • I'm Catholic and will be baptizing DD in the spring. I'm not super devout and don't agree with everything the church stands for but I do strongly believe in God and want to pass on my beliefs on to my child.

This. And my DD is Avery as well. Great minds thinks alike :)

This.  I was raised Catholic and have a strong belief in God (although I do disagree with some of the Church teachings) and I think it is impt for my son to be raised with a specific faith.

  • My DH's family is very Catholic, so we will have her christened next month b/c it is important to them. I was raised Baptist and like the pp I chose to be baptised when I was old enough to make that decision for myself. I really don't care is DD decides to be Catholic or Baptist, or whatever as long as she understands the importance of faith.

  • I am protestant, but my DH and his family are Catholic.  DH's father is a deacon at a Catholic Church, so he will be baptizing dd in a few months.

While baby baptism is not part of my personal belief, I see no harm in following his family traditions. I also want dd to be baptized later in life if she chooses to be.

And, truth be told, I think DH's father would be offended if we did not let him baptize her.

  • Our family is Catholic... to not baptize is out of the question.
  • I'm Roman Catholic and my husband is Buddhist. We both undestand each other's religion with respect and we are both as you say slightly religious. I don't go to Church everyweek and he's never step into a Buddhist temple. We're having LO baptized for we do believe we want her to be part of God's children. She will be introduce to both religion as she grows up.

  • I am planning on baptizing my LO in the Summer. I feel that I would like to raise my child knowing that there is a higher power. Though I am not a religious fanatic I do believe that there is a higher power. When he gets older and decides that he wants to follow a different faith, that is fine by me and i will respect his decision.

Also, I feel that it sometimes looks a little funny when a 25 year old man gets baptized in order to get married in a cathloic church. I would rather baptize him when he is younger.

This is really interesting.  Does the church in which you are baptizing your daughter have any objections to your DH being Buddhist?
