Pronunciation?

I love Lucia.. pronounced Loo-sha.. husband hates it.. Does anyone like pronunciation Luchia, Lu-see-a ?

Re: Pronunciation?

  • I had a boss with this name, she pronounced it Loo-Chee-Uh.  I think that is more of an Italian pronounciation.
    Sadie is not impressed.

  • It?s Loo-see-ah in Spanish. I think it is in English too, never heard it the first way you referred to it.

  • I think Lucia is cute. I went to school with a boy named Lucian. (Lou-Shin) and I really liked that.

I thought it was Lou-cha. I think that's how the Italian's pronounce it. I like it either that way or Loo-sha, like you said.

  • I pronounce it Loo-sha like St. Lucia.
  • I would pronounce it Loo See Ah.

  • I have seen the name Lucia pronounced Loosh-ah.  I pronounced it Loose-e-a, and she just corrected me like it happened all of the time.  I also know someone with the name Lucia that pronounces it like loose-e-a.  I am not sure which way is more common.  Either way I think she will have to correct people on how it is pronounced.
  • I would pronounce it Loo-chee-a

I'm editing to add that I have heard it pronounced Loo-sha (like St. Lucia, as pp said).  So even though it's not my first reaction, I think it totally makes sense

  • I have a niece named Lucia, pronounced Loo-see-a. I like it. It often gets shortened to Cia (see-a), because that is how her older sister says it. Somehow, that has just stuck. GL!

  • Ok sooo strange. As I was reading this, it came on E! News that Mel Gibson's girlfriend just gave birth to a baby girl and named her Lucia. Pronounced Loo-see-uh. I also taught a girl who pronouced it this same way.

I like it pronounced Loo-see-uh or Loo-sha as in St. Lucia. Plus, Lucy is a sweet nn.

  • Our daughter is Lucia...Loo-sha. I still love the name, but it gets butchered everywhere we go. We use Lulu a lot, just to save her from being called the wrong name.
  • I would say Loo-see-ah

  • I like both pronunciations.
  • I pronounce it Lu-see-a and prefer that to Lu-chee-a (unless you are Italian, then it makes sense to favor the second pronunciation). I have never met anyone who pronounces it Loo-sha. That sounds odd to me.

  • In the US, I would think it goes something like this:

Most common = Loo-SEE-ah (Spanish pronunciation)

Second most = Loo-CHEE-ah (Italian pronunciation)

Least common (at least for a person's name) = LOO-sha (as in St. Lucia, the island)

  • I've known 2 Lucias - one was Luchia, the other Lu-see-a.

I love the name and just asked DH if he liked it yesterday (we love Lucy but I was looking for something similar and a little longer) and he said no. Booo.

  • I have a friend named Lucia, pronounced Lu-chee-a.  She's Italian.

DH's sister is Lucia, pronounced Lu-see-a.  She's Mexican.

Either way, she'd be constantly correcting people.

  • My first thought was Loo-sha, just as you stated.  I love it, too, but I could see where it could get mis-pronounced.

  • I would look to the girl's last name as an indication of how it's to be pronounced.

    Italian last name = Lou-chee-ah

    Spanish last name = Lou-see-ah

    French last name = Lou-sha

If the last name was some other ethinicity then I would go with Lou-chee-ah because that's the pronounciation I've heard most.
