Cradle Cap: worst ever seen!

My poor DS has the worst cradle cap our ped's office has ever seen! It was a sticky, bloody, oozy mess - and that was after we washed it RIGHT before he went to sleep last night! And the same rash was covering his face and arms and was even spreading to his legs. It's been awful. My little guy has developed the lovely fine motor skill of ITCHING! (which is where the blood came from). My ped had 3 different docs look at it to make sure it wasn't infected before she finished. I think EVERY person who worked in the office popped their head in our room at some point to look at his little head. I was crying by the time I left because I felt so badly, even though my Ped reassured me that there was nothing I did wrong. I had even called in to talk to her last week about it, and she said that it was HER fault because she didn't realize how bad it had gotten and she should have brought him in last week.

So anyone who has HORRID cradle cap issues, here's what my Ped Rx'd: 1% hydrocortisone LOTION (not cream as it absorbs better) throughout the day, comb out the scales and baby shampoo every day with cool water, and a special shampoo that is like baby selsun blue 2x's a week.

If your baby has a yellow scaley rough patch of cradle cap - make sure to point it out to your ped - especially if it starts to grow. Note how often you oil and shampoo it, and how fast it comes back. If it's persistent, you might need to really make a point to the doc that it needs tending.

One thing my ped said that was important: never leave oil in the baby's hair. Always oil it, leave it sit for 10 minutes, comb out the scales, then shampoo the oil out. Oil can really make the scales build up and cause an infection.

  • Im glad you got it taken care of but part of me wonders why on earth you waited till it was so bad that it was the worst they had ever seen.

  • As I said in the original post: I called in LAST week but our Ped told us we were doing everything we could do, and that it would go away on it's own.

For over a week now, we have been oiling and shampooing the little guy 2 times a day (per doc orders at his recent checkup). We were even in the office early last week getting our H1N1 vaccine (Not the baby, the rest of us), and our Ped zipped by, took a peek, checked in with me and reassured me again that as long as I was oiling, brushing, and shampooing, that it was all I could do.

It just really got BAD in the last week. And when I called in to check in last Friday, the doc said not to come in... but this morning I insisted - with good reason.

  • It sounds like you did everything right... You didn't ignore it and took you Pedi's advice.   At least now you have more that you can do and it will get better.  Don't feel bad stuff like this happens.. at least you took an active approach to get it better!

  • My DS had the same thing...maybe not as bad, but it was really bad.  I was embarrased to get him out in public because it was so nasty looking, it also spread down his face, etc.  Our dermatologist prescribed DERMA-SMOOTHE-FS SCALP OIL  and it cleared it up within 1 week.  After the first shampoo, there was a significant improvement.  You might ask your doc about it in case what you do doesn't help soon.  Good luck!
