Hutch or no hutch?

Anyone have any experience using a changing table with a hutch?  Or planning to order one?

I love the look, and the bit of extra storage space it provides, but do you think it would be hard to maneuver to change a baby since the hutch takes away some space on the edge of the changing table? Not sure if that made any sense... I just can't picture how to stand on the side of the changing table (by baby's feet) and not be bumping into the hutch. I haven't looked at any in-person, though, just looking online. So maybe once we start actually looking that will answer my question :)

Re: Hutch or no hutch?

  • Our dresser had the option of the hutch and I saw it in person at the store - we opted against the hutch for a couple of reasons :  first of all, IMO, it takes away a few inches of space to manuever around the baby while changing and second of all, the hutch itself, although provides loads of shelves and space for frames, stuffed toys etc.. completely takes up the entire wall space.  Our nursery is only 10 x 10 and one wall is basically the closet, the other has a window and the crib, one has the bathroom entry, so the only complete wall is where the dresser will go... We already had beautiful framed artwork for the wall above the dresser/changer so we needed that wall to be free, not blocked by a hutch.

  • We opted against the hutch... instead, we ordered the coordinating mirror to go above the dresser.  This way, it will grow with the baby... and the room is pretty small- 10x10 or 10x11 I think... and a hutch would really impede on the space- making it feel smaller.

  • We did not do the hutch because I felt it would be in the way of trying to change the baby, etc.  If you really wanted one you could always buy it and then store it until later, or just buy it at a later date.

  • We went with the hutch.  My SIL had it and said it was fine for changing the baby.  The only thing we may do is take off the bottom shelf (although I don't think this is necessary), then replace it once we no longer use it for changing diapers.

We liked it for displaying books and some other items that we received for the baby and there would have been no other place in our nursery.

  • I decided not to get it after a couple friends said they whacked their kids heads on it a time or two....when they were a little older and more squirmy.  :)
  • we went for the hutch as well. its a smaller room so the extra shelf space is really useful.Otherwise we'd be hanging shelves on the wall, so same same.

As far as changing the baby on it, our bottom shelf can be removed then put back after we're done using it as a changing table.

I too was concerend about it being too overwhelming in the room bc again, its a small room, but it doesnt at all. Now we can put books and little things we got on the shower on there. Oh, and it came with a kit to prevent it from falling over, god for bid.

  • We opted for the hutch and love it.  Our nursery is tiny and we don't have a closet so we need all the shelf space we can get.  You can either leave off the bottom shelf, or just raise it higher like we did.  I don't think it will cause a problem.
