Help (TMI?)

DD has had icky diarrhea poop the last few days. Today it was so bad that she developed a painful diaper rash. I put her in a sposie tonight and she cried asking me to take it off. I know the CDs are more comfortable for her but I can't use the diaper rash cream that works (Balmex). Anyway, what can I do diet wise so that she goes back to normal poops? The last few days she's eaten: grilled cheese, yogurt, mac n cheese, strawberries, mandarin oranges, cereal (Cheerios), apple juice, orange juice and grape juice, gatorade, water and milk. She doesnt' eat much for veggies, any suggestions there too? And could lack of veggies be causing this problem?

  • Sounds like teething....???? Possible?

  • Balmex is CD safe, if I remember correctly.  If you're in doubt, just lay a wash cloth over the area where the cream is.

For the poop itself, you want the BRAT diet.

    Bananas
    Rice
    Apples
    Toast.

Maybe...but she's not chewing her hands or asking for ice which is her usual for teething...ugh I hate mystery problems like this.

  • The brat diet is for diarrhea.  Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.

I can do that...she will eat all of those things. Oh she had a banana today too...

  • I was just about to ask if she's teething as well?  Sounds like she's getting a lot of fiber in her diet already.
  • I'd probably skip the juices for a bit, and focus more on milk and water. I would also do applesauce, cheerios (which I see you have been doing), and other high fiber foods.
  • Is she still nursing?  If so, you're probably producing colostrum which has a laxative effect.  If the dietary changes don't make a difference there might not be anything to do except try to catch it fast.

Not nursing...I'll just try to eliminate juice for a while and upping the fiber and see how she does. Thanks for everyone's advice :-)

  • Now see, I would have totally gone straight to the oranges in the equation but what do I know?  Oranges and I don't agree all that much so maybe that's why I zeroed in on them!!  :)
  • I agree, I was looking at the list as a whole - there's A LOT of citrus (read: acidic) foods in that list.  I'd try cutting back on a lot of those, in addition to the BRAT diet to get her poop back to a normal consistency.
