Umbilical cord stump smelly??

DS belly button is a little bloody and has a funky smell! Is this normal? His ped said to use hydrogen peroxide once a day which we have been doing....

We were told to not do anything and just keep it clean.

DS's smelled also.  Once it fell off and everything was healed, it no longer smelled.

a little blood is nromal however my doc said to contact him if there was a odor......you may want to do so.

When cleaning it, are you really getting in around the stump? We weren't b/c I was scared I wasn't being gentle enough. DS's stump smelled a bit and it turns out I wasn't cleaning it well. (horrible, I know). Don't be afraid to lift the stump a bit and get in there with a Q-tip. You'll probably find some gunk you didn't know about.

This...you gotta get under the stump with alcohol and a q-tip b/c the underneath can keep from drying out b/c it's protected by the dry stump on top. My doc handed me like a million alcohol wipes and told me to do it whenever i changed her diaper b/c after a while she described it would smell like "rotting meat". That scared the crap out of me and i made sure I dried it out.
