Refinish Ikea crib

Has anyone purchased the Singlar or Gulliver cribs from Ikea in beech?  Do these come finished?  I am thinking of getting one but staining it darker and am wondering if it will require sanding.  Has anyone done that before?

I have the gulliver in beach and it does have a very light finish on it.  Yes you'll have to sand it before you can stain it.  There are a lot of cribs in that general price range in darker finishes that I would recommend over refinishing the Gulliver or Singlar.
