Projectile vomit

How much is too much?

DD projectiles at least once a day (usually in the morning) and spits up once or twice after most feedings.  Is this in the normal range?  Just trying to keep my eye out for reflux or anything like that :)

Re: Projectile vomit

  • W was projectile vomiting after every feeding and it ended up being bad reflux. Try keeping her upright for a half hour after each feeding. GL!

  • DD did this also but she outgrew it. She will still projectile vomit 1 time a week though. I did switch her formula to a gentle version.
  • My DD only does this once every 2 weeks or so. That sounds like a little much to me.
  • Projectile vomit could be a sign of pyloric stenosis.  DS was vomiting after every feeding and after seeing the pedi we were told that he had pyloric stenosis.  The pedi told us that it usually shows up at around 3 to 4 weeks old and is most common in first born males who are breastfed.  It can occur in girls but is just not as common.  It started out as spitting up a lot then progressed to vomiting.  By 3 weeks old the vomiting was like clock work after each bottle and worse overnight.  He had surgery to correct it, at about 3.5 weeks old, and has been fine ever since.
  • DD was exactly like this. Projectile vomit once a day, and spitup 2-3 times after each feeding, and pretty fussy after each feed. Pediatrician diagnosed it as reflux... Is she gaining weight? If so, it's unlikely to be pyloric stenosis and most likely reflux.

Also, do you eat lots of dairy and/or soy products? DD completely stopped projectile vomiting as soon as I cut out dairy and soy, and is way less fussy. As soon as I eat lots of dairy, she starts up again with the vomiting and fussing. She still spits up after each feed (nothing seems to help with that), but it's so nice to avoid the vomiting.

This is not necessarily true.  DS was gaining weight just fine.  The pedi had a suspicion of the pyloric stenosis but had it confirmed with an ultrasound of DS's stomach because other than the vomiting DS seemed just fine.
