A little after she turned 2, she started sitting at a booster seat at the table (no tray). She likes it! We just bought a cheap, plain beige booster (I think it's Safety 1st) and I have no complaints.
I would have used her high chair as a booster (Fisher-Price Space Saver) but it was too tall to fit at our table.

We have been using the FP healthy care booster since he was about 10 months old (we don't use the tray, just pulled him up to the table). Just this week we took it away and he just sits in a regular chair.

we used a high chair until about 11-12 months. then a boster at the table- but one we could strap him into. Around 18-19 months we stopped buckling him in. then we bought a cooshie booster. he loves it.
He was in his highchair until this summer (around 25 - 26 months or so). Now he either sits a dining chair by himself, without anything. Or he sits at his kiddie table & chair set.
DD likes her high chair, but for drawing and other fine motor activities, I plunk her on a booster I made by taping 2 phonebooks together, wrapped in plain white paper and decorated with markers and photos, then taped the whole thing, put weather stripping on the bottom to keep it from sliding. She likes it and we tote it along when we all go out to dinner. I also use it as a step stool when she's on the potty. She also puts it on the ground, sits around it and puts books on it while shereads. Cheap and versatile!

Wow, what a wake-up call! DD is still in her highchair at my house and at MIL's house. If we go out to eat, she sits in a booster, but is sooooo antsy and it ends up being a bit of a fight to get her to stay still. I hadn't thought of this being an issue, but I guess with next baby coming soon, we need to transition her. Thanks for posting this!
i loved our high chair (Boon) and it pulled up to the table, but he just seemed bored. we mostly switched to a booster (around 2nd bday) for 'something new'. he does not like to stay at the dinner table long. sigh.
We got these cool highchair things at IKEA that are black/white patterned and kind of funky, but don't have trays. They are like freestanding booster seats. We put both of them at the end of the table and they are narrow enough to both fit. It works really well, and they are cool looking.
They both just kneel in regular chairs for snacks, though.

Highchair!
This!
My DD uses the Fisher-Price booster seat. It has a tray, but you can also remove it and push it up to the table.

booster if we are all eating together
if not, he sits at a toddler table and eats with his sister
