Heating/Reheating BM and Formula?!

I never intended to have to formula feed my newborn, but I have to supplement, so please don't flame.

I was given some Similac samples to use for after we BF my LO (I'm not supplying enough myself to feed her). Today we bought some bigger bottles of Similac and I'm wondering if I can distribute that into the 2 ounce bottles that we need to use and refrigerate what we don't use/reheat it when necessary. The instructions are ambiguous. I have no idea how to go about this formula business.

And on that note, I can fill up a bottle with my breast milk and refrigerate what I don't use, right?

It's been a really stressful week and I'm not sure what I'm doing. :(

Thanks

Re: Heating/Reheating BM and Formula?!

  • I know BM can sit out for 4-5 hours at room temp, not sure what refrig life is, someone else can answer that. I'm not sure about heating formula and why you would want to do that? I think most people give LO room temperature water (we use nursery water) with formula mix. Once mixed, you should use within an hour. I'm not sure about the liquid - we used the 4 oz sizes and were told once opened to also use within an hour.

  • We have the 'ready to feed' formula.

-open formula must be used within an hour, unless refridgerated. So if you have a can of 300 mLs, but only use 100 mLs, refridgerate the unused 200 mLs. The just-opened 100mLs can be used immediately without heating.

-if refridgerated, can last 48 hrs

-once warmed up to room temperature, must be used within 1 hr

-do not reheat already refridgerated and heated formula.

  • I remember the first bit is so stressful! Hang in there!

The formula is ready to feed I take it? I believe if baby has not drank from the bottle (you open & distribute) it is good int he fridge for 24hrs. Once it is open/heated you must use within an hour I believe. (I do not FF but I am pretty sure this is how it goes)

BM can stay at room temp for up to 5 hrs IF LO has not drank from it. In the fridge for 3-5 days. Make sure you don't microwave it just run it under hot water to warm!

  • Here is what I found when I asked the same question to myself regarding BM shelf-life.

     I don't know about formula.
