I had no intention of even trying to potty train DS, as he is only just almost 16 months old and I thought it was way too early. Apparantely, DS has a different plan! The past few days he has been asking us to use the potty (by running into the bathroom and pointing to the potty, pulling on his diaper so I'll take it off, etc). Every single time he asks, we put him on the potty, and he pees. I am still shocked, but I guess he's ready to start?
So obviously I've never potty trained a LO before, lol. Any tips? Should I get him pull ups and really encourage this? I don't expect him to get fully potty trained, and don't want to push him either...but if he's ready, I don't want to hinder him either... help?
Re: RP from 12-24: need potty training help, please.
I would personally skip the pullup and try some big boy underwear. I say try it and see how it goes. If he does well, great! If he doesn't seem to like them or do well, revisit it a couple months later.
Good luck!
Also DD started going on the potty at about 18 months (she would go probably 1-2x a day) but wanted nothing to do with undies. She would just take off the diaper. Then at about 22.5 months she decided she was ready for the undies. We went straight from the diaper to the undies. And she has been potty trained day and night since then.
With my son who is 17 now he did not wet his diaper at night for a long time before he went without during the day. If he wants to I would go from diaper to underwear. I forget his age but he was trained before he was 2 1/2.
My daughter was trained by the time she was 18 months. She wanted to what my son was doing so I put both of them on the potty at the same time. There is only 18 months difference in the ages so it worked great. He took longer than my daugther.
With DD we are struggling she is very strong willed. For the last to morning she has asked to sit on the potty but has already wet her diaper. I put her on the potty anyway for as long as she will stay. This morning she did #2 in the potty for the first time. So maybe we are getting there.
All kids are different........
Not too early at all.
Go straight to underwear and get it over with. If you're worried about messes around the house put plastic pants over the underwear and sweat pants over that to help soak up accidents.
Put him on the potty every hour.
Reward successes.
I highly recommend the book: Early Start Potty Training.
Both my guys were out of diapers during the day by 20 months.
Most countries are done potty training by 2 years old.
He's totally capable of doing this now if you're willing to put in the work.
GL!
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
I think if he's showing signs that he's ready, you should totally run with it. My son started showing signs around 18 months and everyone thought I was crazy for trying to potty train that early. We skipped the pull-ups and went directly to training pants and did stickers or candy as rewards. We also stayed home as much as possible for the first week or so. Good luck!
