Parenting after 35

STTN - I wish!

While DS has STTN a handful of times, for the most part he goes to bed at 10 PM and will wake up at 2 or 3 am. It then takes around 45 minutes to feed him, change him and get him back to sleep.  He'll then sleep until around 7 am.

Aaron usually sleeps in two 4 hour blocks, broken up by his need for formula.  Though on Tuesday night he went to bed at 10, woke up at 12:20 and then at 4 am and again at 7.

I'm so tired. I'm learning to function but it's not easy. And I'm not sure if DS is eating right, sleeping right, etc. I think I need to track this for his 3 mo. well baby visit in 2 weeks.

And the part that gets me, he needs to sleep on his back but prolonged time on his back worsens his plagiocephaly. I wish it were safe to put him to sleep on his stomach. Bleh.

Re: STTN - I wish!

  • Sounds like you are having a rough week.  Sorry Aaron isn't sleeping better for you.  I definitely understand having to learn to function on less sleep than I was used to before DD!  Hang in there!

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • I'm so sorry. How much does he weigh now? As he gets bigger, hopefully he'll start to sleep better.

DH and I were just talking and decided that sttn is a thing of the past for the next 18 years, but it should get better than having a newborn.

  • Oh Robyn, one thing I stopped doing with both my kids was changing them during the night unless they were poopey or had a diaper rash. It may sound mean, but I wanted them to get a bit used to being damp during the night so that a wet diaper wouldn't wake them up.

I'm not entirely sure, but two weeks ago he weighed 13 lb 8 oz ? he's a big boy! I'm guessing he's gained at least a pound by now.

And something to consider re: keeping him in the wet diaper.  I'd been changing him halfway through the bottle just to keep him from getting chafed. But I'm not ruling out leaving the wet diaper on?thus far I haven't had major leakage issues.

  • I thought Sienna wasn't eating enough & still think that. But she just had her 3 month visit & had gained another 2 lbs (80th%)& grew another inch (70th%). The Dr. Says he's not concerned because she is growing fine. I guess she is just picky. Hhhmmm....I have always been picky & now it seems my DD is following my path.

Aaron is growing even faster than her if I recall, so don't stress over it.

She woke up 3 times last night. that is a killer, especially when I am used to her getting up twice. She eats for 10 minutes & falls asleep. Maybe I should try to really get her up---for at least 30 minutes so she eats enough & maybe then she won't get up that 2nd time.

  • Ugh, I don't envy you one bit!

I hesitate to tell you, but my LO (who's almost 11 months) still gets up to eat after 6 hours and then back to sleep for a couple, then I bring him in bed with me to eat more, and then back to sleep, getting up about 11.5 hours after first going to bed.

I don't change his diaper in the middle of the night anymore because we now use pocket diapers that wick pretty well (used prefolds and covers when he was a nb).  I would if there was poo, but he never poos at night.

Also, his reflux was so bad he slept terribly if at all on his back, and the pedi gave us permission to let him sleep on his tummy from the 6 week appt onward (he had really good head control for his age).  This made all the difference in the world.

Hang in there, I can't imagine doing it with 2!

  • Luckily I only have the one!  But it actually makes me feel better to know others have LO's who aren't super great sleepers.  I'm not saying DS is a BAD sleeper for his age. I'm just getting quite envious when I see those "STTN" badges and the babies are younger than DS or the same age.

  • LOL!  Get some sleep if you can!

Yeah... Casey is my first "baby".  I was so thrilled to get him in a photo with Aaron.

  • That's how it had been for us, except he'll usually go back to sleep for a couple of hours after feeding at 7. Of course he only does that because we bring him to bed with us, something I'm too nervous to do for the whole night.

I'm super jealous of girls that have the STTN badge.

It's rough. I'm so sorry Robyn!

  • Not sure this will help but I followed the recommended feeding routine in the book "On Becoming Baby Wise" and LO is doing great. His body is like a clock now and he takes naps during the day and goes to bed from 11-6 or so every night. I think you should read it, can't hurt. Good luck, I know how much sleep deprivation sucks.
