3rd Trimester

Fainting Question

How common is it to actually faint in pregnancy? I have been having severe dizzy spells and I have a big fear of fainting. I've never known anybody that has fainted, however.

Re: Fainting Question

  • It depends...do you have IBS?

  • I got dizzy in early 2nd tri, nothing since though. I think its common.
  • I fainted twice while PG w/ DD.  This time I have been close to it, but it didn't happen.  I have low Iron levels while PG.
  • Just admit who you are.  It can be very stressful lying about your entire life.  This may lead to fainting.

  • And for the record, I fainted a couple weeks ago. In the shower.

  • I had a couple of issues with dizziness before starting to take additional iron. I have also had a couple of times that I almost fell in the shower when I closed my eyes, I think I was trying to get used to the shift in my center of gravity.

  • I don't know that this applies to your situation, but I had heart issues about two years ago (atrial fib and had to be shocked back into the right rhythm due to a weird thyroid thing- long story) which became apparent when I got really dizzy and then blacked out.

I went to see my cardiologist last week and he told me that the dizzy spells I've had (total of three this pregnancy where I felt like I might pass out when I've been standing or walking) are something I need to keep an eye on and if they happen more frequently, then I might need to be put on medication.

That's just my experience- I've never passed out from one of these pregnancy dizzy spells because I've always sat down right away. I would say that if it continues or gets worse, definitely talk to your doctor about it, especially if it happens when you're standing or walking (not just when you get up from sitting or if you are laying on your back or right side). HTH!

    LOL

Your cardiovascular system is undergoing dramatic changes, and during this (2nd) trimester your blood pressure will probably be lower than usual. Don't spring up too fast from a lying or sitting position or you might feel a little dizzy.
