Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your 18 month old walk on their toes?

My son occasionally will "tip toe". I've heard a lot about this being a symptom of autism, but I don't know how reliable that is. My son only does it occasionally, and only for five steps or so. So I was wondering if other kids sometimes tip toe, or if any degree of tip-toeing is a symptom.[Poll]

  • I asked this a couple of weeks ago, and many people responded their child started doing this as well.  It made me feel better. :)

  • My almost 16 month old started doing it a month or so ago.  I don't really know that I believe the autism thing though.  Don't they link almost everything to that these days?

I have God-children and nieces and cousins who have all done this and not one is autistic.

  • DD just started doing this. It's only once in a while and usually when she has been told to look for something. It's like she is trying to sneak maybe??

phew. So far the poll results are confirming that. But these autism information sites you Google are often so vague- they don't clarify if your kid has to tip-toe all the time or just occasionally.

  • I asked my pediatrician about that at the last appt and was told that when toddlers are learning to walk they are still working on balance, they will walk on their tip toes, then go through a stage where they walk toes in....and then toes out before the settle in the middle and walk straight.  She told me it was absolutely nothing to worry about.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much.  One of DH's cousins sons walked on his toes for quite a long time, and he's 6 now and definitely not autistic.
  • Kids think it's neat when they learn to do something new.  My daughter is currently in the spin as fast as I can until I get dizzy phase.  It's new.  It's entertaining.  Can the tip toe walking be a sign of autism?  Yes, but it is also the sign of a normal kid learning to walk.  Unless you see other issues, I wouldn't be concerned.
