What to do about possible drugs next door?

I could totally be jumping to conclusions here but I don't know what's going on.  Several nights ago DH took me to the living room to see if I smelled the weird chemical smell up there.  I was worried the kids somehow got to some of our cleaning stuff although most is nontoxic and not where the kids can get to it.  This was in the evening, pretty sure the same evening the neighbors had several people over.  So the next morning the smell was gone.  Now we just got home after being gone all day and it has a strong weird chemical smell in both the living room and kitchen.  I don't know what it could be.  Are they possibly making drugs because I don't know what else would cause that smell?

  • With that much to go on, nothing.  They could have been refinishing furniture for all you know.  If they have a lot of people coming and going on a regular basis, that is a different thing.  Most people "cooking drugs" are doing it some place where they don't share a wall.
  • Should I ask if they've been putting some kind of chemicals in their yard or doing something with furniture or just wait and see?  We're in a house so they're close but we don't share a wall.  It's just really bad right now and I had a headache to begin with and it's just making it worse.

That would scare me though. What if they're not like most people.. you know? ?I would probably?call the?cops. Better safe than sorry. Are they going to know if you?called, like are you their only neighbor??

  • you could ask them and be innocent like, "do you think it's gas or something?"
  • We're not their only neighbor.  We live in just a regular in town neighborhood.  We've never spoken to them before.  When we first moved in no one lived there.  Then people would come occasionally and I guess work on the house, then they would be gone.  Now they are there living this time (possibly the same people).  It just does not smell good.  I think I'll get DH to call and ask about it.

  • There's really no way for me to ask this without sounding like a snarkybitch, but seriously?

What's your husband going to ask them?  "Um, I'm from next door, it smells like you've got a meth-lab cooking over there.  What's up?"

  • Yea.. I think if you talk to them directly then have to?call the police, they're going to know it's you.?

Whereas, if you just?call and let the police handle it, they're not going to suspect you, you know??

    ?

  • Do they have a lot of trash?  That's common for drug cookers.

I meant call the general police line, not our neighbors.  We're going to let it go for now but if it happens more often we'll have to figure out what it is because whatever it is it can't be healthy for us to breathe in, especially for the kids.

I'm actually not sure if they have a lot of trash or not.  We're allowed one big trash bin thing that the city provides so if they're throwing anything else out it isn't here.
