H1N1 Shot

Are any prego mothers out there going to get or received the H1N1 vaccination? My doctor recommends it for me but I have my hesitations.

Let me know!

Thanks,

Amy

Re: H1N1 Shot

  • My doctor and the CDC both recommend the H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women. I definitely plan on getting the H1N1 vaccination. I realize that it is completely a personal choice and that some do have hesitations. So for those people, ignore my post and do whatever you know to be the best for you and your baby - that's all we can ever do, right?

For me, the known risks outweigh the hypothetical risks (and I have definitely done my research -- I have my Ph.D. in child development, conduct research on high-risk child populations, and have probably read all the research there is out there). The H1N1 vaccination is very similar to the regular flu vaccine, and if you are nervous about the preservatives in the vaccinations, you can always ask for the thimerisol free version. Of course, you should do your own research to make sure that this choice is best for you. There are definitely people out there with strong opinions on either side, so my best advice is to arm yourself with as much reliable and valid information you can get your hands on and make the decision for yourself (www.cdc.gov has general information about the vaccine and their advice).

My main problem right now is that I can't even find the vaccine anywhere! I called a flu hotline (877-764-2670) this week and they said to check back on 10/30 for locations of where it will be available this weekend. Or, you can go to www.cir.org as well. If anyone finds out different information - can you let us all know?

If you do decide not to get it, just make sure you stay healthy and stay away from anyone who might be sick (that's good advice anyway)!

  • i already got my regular flu shot and still on the fence with the H1N1...my ob gave me a weird look when I told her that I may not be getting it.
  • I got my H1N1 shot on Monday as recommended and provided by my OB. (Guess I was lucky that she had it in her office)

I read the research and for me, the benefits far outweigh the risks. I haven't lost a wink of sleep over my decision.

  • There was a post below about this. I got the shot. I'm high risk because of the pregnancy, and I travel frequently for work which gives me a greater risk of being exposed. The benefits far out weigh the risks for me. My OB's office had the shot so I got mine last week.
  • I got the shot last weekend when the Mollen Clinic was doing it for high risk people.  I'm a teacher and see 750 students a week, and we have had several students with confirmed cases.

I think it is a personal choice.  Since I am 24 weeks pregnant I chose the shot.  I also got a seasonal flu shot a month ago.

  • Thank you for all the insight and information!
  • That makes me feel good. My doctor said I could get it but I just had hesitations because it's so new. Thank you for sharing!
  • I am still waiting on my doctor to recieve the shot--he told me he would only give me the preserative free shot and said I should also have the regular flu shot that is the same way.
