Parenting after a Loss

Anyone else feel stuck in house b/c of swine flu?

I really don't want to risk Hailey and I catching anything so I've been avoiding crowded public places, which basically leaves me at home with the occasional walk in the neighborhood. I'm going a little stir crazy, but I'll deal with it if it means Hailey will stay healthy. Anyone else feel this way?

  • This is not necessarily a bad idea in general, but if it's H1N1 in particular that is keeping you in the house, girl, free yourself!  It's a huge sham.  A CBS investigation found that 98 to 99 percent of cases that were diagnosed as swine flu were found, upon confirmatory lab tests, not to have been flu at all. Many were just a common cold.  And yet the government and the media keep trying to make us believe that it's an epidemic.  What I want to know is, why?  Read the article here.

  • i think you can find articles on the internet arguing both sides of anything. use common sense--people are dying from the swine flu every day. and your baby is so tiny & fragile still. all i know is the various medical professionals that treat stella on a weekly & monthly basis (pediatrician, pulmanologist, GI dr., public health nurse) all recommend that my DH & i are vaccinated for the seasonal flu & H1N1 & that we go into hibernation until RSV season is over. I would not be able to live with myself if my DD got sick and ends up back in the hospital on life support. not worth it.
  • I wouldn't confine yourself to the house. There are plenty of places you can goto without worrying whether your LO will get sick. And remember that your lo has your immunities for quite a while.

So if you're really worried about people, cover her stroller with a blanket, don't let people breathe on her.

But I wouldn't hole yourself up. That's nuts.

    YES!!! ME ME ME!!!

Our Pediatrician said to keep her out of enclosed spaces for the first 8 weeks of her life.  So that, plus H1N1 and WA not having the vaccines available yet have made us hermits.  I am going stir crazy!!!

  • crazy, not to be a b*tch or anything (because you know I love you), but it seems your DD has been sick alot lately...  some good old-fashioned hermit-ing might do you guys a bit of good too!

I know our situation is alot different from all of you on this board (my dd came home on oxygen & has crappy lungs & even though I breast feed, she is still super super prone to getting sick & her getting sick=being alot closer to death than the full term babies on here).  I am just a fanatic about this i guess.  i don't think you can be too careful.  i am definitely going totally crazy as most days i only leave the house for walks, but i feel like no trip to the pumpkin patch or target is worth her picking up germs.

  • So glad I'm not alone in being overly cautious!

True, you can find stuff on the Internet to support anything, but this was an investigation done by a reputable news outlet by FOIAing records from the CDC itself.  I personally don't think it can be dismissed out of hand.  (And you can also find medical professionals on both sides of the issue; our pediatrician and our family doctor are the ones who sent me the article - they believe H1N1 has been blown way out of proportion).  FWIW, people die of the normal flu every day too ... there's no indication yet that swine flu is more deadly than the seasonal flu.  Anyway, as I said, it's not necessarily a bad idea to sequester your tiny baby somewhat due to ALL germs.  I just think the swine flu hysteria is a bit out of hand, is all.

  • My pedi said going out is fine as long as I don't let people touch him (duh!)

  • Ehh - it's a fine line. For the younger babies or anyone with pre-existing conditions, I can understand the thought to stay at home. However with older babies or young toddlers, I think it may be a little different.

Regardless of thought process, the most important line of defense is be informed. Knowing what symptoms require urgent attention is vital.

I can understand being concerned. My DD's daycare had their first confirmed case of H1N1 2 weeks ago. I then had a very detailed conversation with the pedi....  Later that day we had a great time at the pumpkin patch.
