Are Catheters mandatory during birth? I've seen posts about women pushing their cath out during labor. I know this is routine for a c/s. Is it for all vaginal births or just some?

I don't think they're mandatory for all births. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you have to have one if you get an epidural.
I think this too. I had epi and cath with DD. Didn't push it out though, LOL. But they took it out after, and I was so swollen in the morning and couldn't pee so they put it back in. The pain from that was almost worse than the back labour.
Yet another reason for me to want to avoid an epi, lol.
When I first got PG I thought that my mom going natural 3x was insane and herculean; the more I talk to people, the more I understand it! Talk about putting something in the wrong hole......
I think it's mandatory if you have an epi since you have no control of your netherregions while they are numb.
Mine wasn't that bad. They took it out as soon as I could get up and to the bathroom. It felt WEIRD coming out, but I didn't have any UTI's or other complications from it. Knock on wood that it's that easy this time around.

When I had DS, I don't remember the cath being that bad. But, after it came out, I had ZERO bladder control for a few weeks. I'm not sure if it's completely related to the cath, but I prefer not to blame it on the lack of kegels
omg I hope not. I had to have one when I had my m/c and it hurt SOOOOO bad... She was like "its only going to stink a little" .... umm how about yeah effing right that shiiiit sucked!!!!!!!! I will pee on the DR before I let them but a cath in me again.

my ob said you get one if you get an epi or have to be knocked out for a c/s but otherwise you don't have to. I had to have one for another surgery about 2 years ago and other than it burning really bad the first couple times I peed after I had it out it wasn't a big deal.

No kidding... seriously... exit only people! There's plenty of other fluids coming out, a little pee isn't going to hurt anyone! It's not like they give you a colostomy bag because you might poo!

I had an epidural with DD and a catheter was mandatory since you cant get up to go. They waited until my epidural was working before they put it in, and took it out before i pushed my daughter out. I had no problems with going to the bathroom after
