Highly perturbed.

I was informed at Joanie's school today that children aren't allowed at school with any form of cough.  Is this standard for you all?

My response:  "Ok.  I'll see you in February.  I'll suspend payment until then."

Re: Highly perturbed.

  • Holy crap, are you serious?!?!? What the heck do they think they are going to do all winter?

My mom kept DS home from "daycare" the other day because he had a runny nose. My DH went off on her because not only is there WHERE he got the runny nose, but if we kept him home every time he just had a tiny stuffy nose, we might as well not send him at all. 90% of the time it's stuffy! Doesn't mean he's got H1N1!

  • With a COUGH!?  I think that's insane.  Fever, I can understand ... but a cough could be a bagillion different things!  And many of them not contagious!

  • Really?  I wonder if that is newly instated this year.  When I was growing up, it had to be a fever.

  • I had a chronic cough as a child... I would've missed YEARS! What about kids with asthma?!?

  • DS isn't in school, but cough is so tough to figure out...  He actually has a fever today, and I'm trying to decide if it might be the flu-- but he's not coughing (yet anyway).

    How frustrating!

Exactly.  If we all stayed home every time we had a cough or runny nose, society as we know it would essentially shut down for the better part of the year.

I'm glad to know that it's not just me who takes issue with this.  Although, I think I'm a bit jaded, as a kid who had H1N1 was at school and infected the entire class.  How on earth did that happen if the Gestapo Nurse was doing her job?

^This exactly.  A cough tells you nothing.  A fever, yes, but a cough?  That is stupid.

  • I'm assuming its a private school (re: payment)? If so, they can do whatever they want unfortunately :(

I think its excessively overboard and ridiculous but its a symptom of the media machine that is "infecting" the brains of people.
  • I see why, but that is ridiculous.  I mean allergies, asthma, etc.

  • That's ridonkulous. And I'm betting it's because a cough is one of the symptoms of H1N1. Fun times.

  • that is crazy, i think a lot of it is hype. and there is so much conflicting info out there...but just a cough, and no school, crazy.

  • wow, that's crazy!  what about kids who have bacterial infections with a cough that is clearly not contagious?  i'm sure you're not the only parent who is not cool with this.

  • I think you should send her in with a doctor's note that says "Gladlet is allowed to cough throughout cold and flu season, signed, Sensible, MD"

  • everything is getting to have such strict regulations. The crazy thing aboutthat rule is that not only is a cough not a good indicator, but also (correct me if i'm wrong) you don' thave symptoms of H1N1 until AFTER you are already contagious.

My BFF is going through her first pregnancy, with twins, and is having major stress because the hospital will not allow ANY visitors other than her hubby for the entire time she is in labor and recovering. They also will not allow her to tour the facility in advance, so she will be going into a strange environment. She can't have her mom, her sister, or me there with her. And her H will likely have to go home at night to care for the animals, and might have to go to work some as well, so she will be totally alone, probably recovering from a c-section, with two babies. I know the nurses are there to help, but that would be very depressing.

  • DS has been sent home for being disruptive since he has a horrible allergy cough from oh march to may.
  • What? That's such an overreaction. We were at the doc yesterday for dd's stomach virus. She's 6 mo. and coughs all the time. Always has - she chokes on her saliva. People were starring at me like I was the devil.
