Pregnant after 35

I get to pee in a jug for 24 hours

My BP was really high yesterday -- 153/94, so my peri wants to run some tests.  I have to pee in a jug for 24 hours straight, then get bloodwork.  Ugh.  I don't mind the peeing in a jug part, but I hate giving blood.  My veins are small, so they end up having to suck from both arms, and I always end up with nasty bruises for a week.  My other concern is about the jug -- what if it's not big enough for all my pee?  Indifferent

The good news from my appt yesterday is that my baby looks great -- her HB is strong, and she is growing on schedule.  She was so funny -- she rotated herself 360 like a clock hand and was upside down for part of the u/s.  Her spine is also now more prominent, showing up whiter on the screen.  Although it takes a lot of time going to the peri every two weeks, it is pretty cool seeing my baby so often.

  • Ohhh I love seeing the baby... that's so nice for you... Sorry about the jug thing.  That would be very hard for me- but I guess try to remember that it is for the good of your little one- it won't be fun, but you'll get through it.

Keep us posted on your progress.

  • Do not worry, the jug will be big enough!  When I had to do it, my ob gave me two jugs.  I thought there is no way I am going to fill them.  Surprisingly you can.   I am with you on the giving blood.  I ended up with so many bruises from the hospital when I gave birth to DS.  I thought cant you people find a vein?  I sure hope that does not happen this time.

  • It's great to hear that your LO is doing so well!!  Sorry about your BP though.  I hope your tests come back fine and they can get your BP under control!

I've never had to do a 24 hr collection.  Do you have to save all the urine from each time you go to the bathroom?

I sure feel your pain about the bloodwork.  I have horrible veins.  Doing bloodwork or having an IV are always awful!

    GL with everything!!

  • I had higher bp than normal for me for many weeks. I hope that your bp goes back to normal and all tests are normal.

It must have been wonderful to see your little girl. I am glad that went well.

Eek!  I got only one jug.  I drink a ton of water, so I think I need to go back and get another jug.  I am worried that one jug is too small.  Heck, I bet I can fill up half of one jug with my FMU!

  • Ugh. I would be afraid I would need 4 jugs to hold all of my pee these days. Ii hope you get a good phlebotomist and that your BP starts heading south.

Yes, I have to collect every single drop of pee for 24 hours.  It should be fun.  Tongue Tied  I also have to keep the jug/pee refrigerated, so I will wait until the weekend to do my collection.  I would just die if any of my coworkers found out I have a jug of pee in the office fridge!

You're right.  Maybe I should pick up three jugs!

  • Oh and if you need to refrigerate it.  Get a big cooler to put under your desk at work.  It was very helpful and that way I did not have to put the jug in the fridge at work.  They also gave me a bag where I carried the jug and the collector to the bathroom in.

  • Oh the joy of pregnancy! Hope the blood work goes well and BP comes down soon.
  • Oh dear! I hope your BP and bloodwork do what they're supposed to do. Good luck with the 'collection'..

  • I've had to endure the jug-o-pee thing twice now and I've never had a problem just using one jug... and I drink a good 100 oz of water a day. The first time I collected wasn't so bad as I was home but the second time I had to do it while working. Um... NOT fun- particularily when I had to go to the bathroom during lunch breaks and had to walk into the lunchroom to grab the jug-o-pee and walk toward the bathroom.

    GL!

  • i feel your pain.  I had to do the urine collection a few weeks ago.  Surprisingly I didn't need a second jug and I really thought that I would.

I have to admit it was a very interesting day.  I had one bathroom dedicated for me so everything I had to go I just went to that bathroom this way I could leave the "hat" on the toilet seat.  This is was my peri call the collector thing that was I had to use.
