Today I had my 14 week Dr's appointment. During the appointment, my doctor asked me if I wanted to get the Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test done at my next appointment. For those of you who are unsure about what the AFP test is, here's what it is:
"With maternal serum screening, a sample of blood is tested. This usually is done between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. Test results can be combined to determine the risk of certain disorders. The test results show if there is an increased risk for neural tube defects, Down syndrome, trisomy 18, or abdominal wall defects. An abnormal result only signals a possible problem. In most cases the baby is healthy even if there is an abnormal blood test result."
Now my question is, do most women get tested? I am just a little concerned about a "false positive." If I get an abnormal result, I don't want to worry the whole rest of my pregnancy whether or not my baby is healthy or not. Please share your thoughts!
