NPR-HELP puppy question

ok so we got our puppy a week ago, the first night he did great and it has all been down hill from there.  We are crate training him at night.  I put his bed in there, his favorite toy and a treat, we turn off the lights, he wimpers for about 5-10 min. and then he goes to sleep.  The problem is he wakes up at 1-2 in the morning!!! and then i take him out, bring him back in, put him back in the crate/kennel and he does nothing but bark, cry, wimper, ect.  what do i do? and it's not like we are putting him to bed at 8 or anything, we put him in when we go to bed about 10:30-11.  Any suggestions?? I know it will take time, but it's been a week, I'm sooo tired.  I can't go back to sleep after i let him out in the morning, because he still chews on everything he sees and he still goes potty in the house if you don't watch him.  Is there anything else i can try?? Putting him in bed with us is NOT at option, DH says NO.

Re: NPR-HELP puppy question

  • ignore him when he wakes up.  He will settle down to go back to sleep.

  • Having a puppy is like having a baby in a lot of ways. They are brand new to the world and only know so much. Just like with a baby, the puppy needs to learn that night time is not playtime. You will most likely need to get up take him out in the middle of the night for a few more weeks until his little bladder is able to hold more. Just like with a child, you can limit his amount of water after a certain hour, but the fact still remains that the puppy needs to be physically ready to hold it all night long. When we got our Pug, it was probably a good 6 weeks after we got him when he finally stopped needing to get up in the middle of the night to go. Good luck and congrats on the puppy!

  • Just put him back in the crate.  Try the crate in different places- try it right by your bed, or try it in another room and put in ear plugs, LOL.
  • take him out to go (he is actually being a good dog by waking you up bc he has to potty) and make sure he goes for a massive walk at some point in the day -- he just might not be tired enough.

Also, throw a tshirt in his crate that smells like you.
