shih tzus and babies

Hello all,

I have a shih tzu who is a total momma's girl and very territorial.  I have no idea how shes going to react to the babies, but have a feeling its not going to be good.  Any shih tzu owners out there have any experience with this...and advice?

  • why do you think this is a breed specific thing?

  • b/c most people I know who have shih tzus say the same thing...as do the books I have on them.

  • Pittieboo over on Pets has some great tips in her bio for introducing dogs and babies.  There are a lot of things you can do now to help get ready.

The key thing to keeping everyone happy is to always closely supervise any interactions between dogs and small kids and to keep them apart when either is sleeping or eating.

  • I have a lhasa (cousin of shih tzu) named Hana.  She was/is great with DS.  She was 2 when we had him and we always knew we would have a baby so we brought her around babies and kids from an early age and kept future children in mind when we let her develop habits.

Hana is a mommy's dog too.  When we brought DS home, she didn't eat for awhile.  Then she started limping around.  We brought her to the vet and they said she was fine but wanted attention (LOLOLOL).  It was tough to balance it all in those early months, but it all worked out.  We have video of newborn ds laying on the floor and Hana bringing over her toy and pushing it at him, hoping to play the throw and chase game :). Now he is old enough to actually play.  She has always loved and protected DS (follows him everywhere and lays nearby) and she now has more attention than ever (3 people instead of 2).  Pretty soon though, Baby #2 will be here and she will likely be back to limping around for a month or two.  :)

Fortunate to be a SAHM to my 3 musketeers (5/2006, 5/2010 & 12/2011). Soy & dairy free for the 3rd and final time. Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers imageimage
  • Ours is older (9 now) and has always just kept away from kids.  She is very timid by nature.  I would look at how she acts around other kids.
