Toddlers: 24 Months+

Honestly, what's the harm?

I am NOT flaming anyone who said they won't let their DC have candy, but seriously... why not a few M&Ms or a sucker?  It's Halloween!!! It's not going to start a bad habit, or ruin their teeth! Big Smile

Re: Honestly, what's the harm?

  • I'm not letting DD have candy yet becuase she's just got too good of a memory. I have enough issues to battle her over. I don't want to add "you can't have candycorn for breakfast" as one of those issues.

I know a few candies won't hurt her, start her on a lifetime of bad food choices or rot her teeth. It's just something I'd rather not start at this age. Maybe when she's 4, but not now. And I'd feel weird about taking candy from my neighbors when she wasn't going to eat it.

    I get that. : )

  • Id give her a treat or 2...its all in fun!  She's had a few things here and there and isnt a candy freak, doesnt ask for it or anything so for us its fine.
  • I don't think there is harm in letting your dc have candy but I really like that dd doesn't know what a m&m is. Right now, I can get her excited about eating an apple or grapes like it's candy so I don't want to ruin that. I have her believing yogurt is ice cream & crackers are cookies too. She has the real stuff sometimes too(don't worry, I'm not that mean) but hasn't caught on.

Plus, if she knows what the wrappers look like everytime we go into cvs she is going to start grabbing all the candy that is at her level at checkout.

My dd will probably get a piece of chocolate or candy bar(without the wrapper) for Halloween though. Just not a lot-she's only 2 & I don't think she needs it.

  • DD will have some. I am not going to let her go overboard by any means but a little here and there, won't hurt her. :)

ditto.  Carson has the occasional sucker, he has cake at birthday parties.  i will let him join in the fun on holidays but i monitor the situation.  when i feel like he has had enough i draw the line, fit or no fit.

  • I guess I'm a bad mom.  I had a PG craving for peanut butter cups when we were at CVS today.  I got them and the girls each got one (the snack size, though they have gotten the full size).  Yes, even DD#2.  FWIW, they know they only get sweets of any kind as special treats (sometimes randomly but usually because they ate a good dinner or something like that).  Even DD#2 understood she was just having one and was ok with me telling her "no" when she asked for another.

The girls will go T-or-T and will get candy.  That candy will last us until Christmas or later when I will finally pitch the rest of it...  Unless the PG cravings kick in and I eat more than I usually do of it.  Stick out tongue

  • ITA with Bright.  At this point she doesn't know what she is missing, so why try and fight a battle.  Plus, Olivia doesn't like sweets at all.  I gave her a little piece of cake at a birthday party this weekend and she didn't want anything to do with it.

The obesity issue in this country is out of control, and there will be so many food battles as she gets older.  I don't see anything wrong with holding off as long as possible.
