Re: Birthing classes....

  • Our office offers different classes in the 2nd and 3rd timesters. They said to check back at 18 weeks and see what the classes were, that is my next appointment.

  • I'm taking mine at the hospital, will be 25 weeks when it starts - a bit early, but I didn't want the holidays and stuff to get in the way and also I wasn't sure if the hospital would be offering another course before our due date.

They recommend that you are finished about 4 weeks before your due date (I think)

  • My DH and I will be looking into natural birthing classes in the next month to go to.  We are doing this early because we want to be informed to make decisions on what kind of birth to have and also to meet doula's.  However, for the other classes (Bradley, ect.) we will wait a bit.
  • I'm doing my classes a little early due to the holidays.  I'll be between 25 and 26 weeks.
  • with my first we took three classes all recommended by my doctor i took them all in the last two months- but i had no signs of giving birth early- and we took them at our hospital so we had to register in the second trimester. also all of our classes were one day classes-

    1) a breastfeeding class- great and very informative- wish i had taken this before my shower so i would have registered for more breastfeeding related items, like pads, pump, milk storage etc

    2) a 10 hour birthing- hospital tour class- we also could have taken this as a series of three classes -but opted for one long saturday- just taught us about the stages of labor, some general pain techniques, the hospital, what to do when we go into labor etc

    3) cpr/ first aid for infants- highly recommend

now that i am expecting my second we are planning on taking a hypnobirthing class to try and have a natural birth the second time around- this is a four week class and i will probably take it the seventh or eight month- but it is not offered through my hospital

  • I start mine at 27 weeks. There are no classes offered the month of December and since I am due at the end of Jan, I really didn't want to risk taking classes right before I was due.

  • We are taking 4 classes, and some that repeat over several weeks, between weeks 21-30.  I too want to miss the holidays and am afraid I'll be too tired way into my 3rd tri.  The classes are generally from 6-9pm at night, and after a long day of work, squeezing a workout in, and eating dinner, this will be tough later!  If interested, our classes are Child/Infant CPR, Care of Newborn, Childbirth Prep, and Breastfeeding Basics.  It's clearly our 1st!
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
  • We're taking a 10 week Bradley Method course that started when I was about 24 weeks. It'll finish just before Christmas and then we'll have a refresher session sometime in January.
  • We start our birthing classes next week (28 weeks) and finish at 32 weeks, but we are doing them early because my doctor thinks I will deliver early.  I think people usually start them around 30 weeks or so and finish 3-4 weeks before EDD.
  • We're taking a natural childbirth options class at our local yoga center. It's a 7 week class and I could have taken it starting at like 18 weeks but opted to wait and now it's from 29-36 weeks (maybe later because we're not sure how the holidays will effect it).

  • Thanks for the thought.... I kept forgetting to ask my doctor so i called the hospital. There are five classes I would like to take and they said they are all free, because I am delivering at that hospital! YAY! and my DH is being so sweet. he is actually excited to go to the classes.
