Hello all. DS got tubes when he was 7 months old and after getting the tubes he had not had one infection. Well we went to the ENT in September and we found out the the tube in the right ear was on its way out. The left ear tube was still in. I could tell there was some difference because the left ear drained when he was sick but the right ear did not. Well, when we went for a check up, we found that DS has an ear infection in his right ear. We took a weeks worth of antibiotics and went back for another check up and found that DS ear was till infected. We go again on Thursday to see if his right ear is clear now.
I really hate that his tubes fell out right before cold season, becuase he was hardly ever sick during the summer, so i am not sure they had a chance to really do their job.
If you DC has/had tubes, did you find that the ear infections started back up after the tubes fell out? What are you doing to prevent ear infections? Did/will your DC have to have another set put in?
Thanks for your help.
Re: If you child had/has tubes please come in...
This is my fear! DD had tubes put in right before Christmas last year. When we went for her check-up in August, the left one was on its way out. I suspect that it will be gone by the time she goes back for her 2 year check-up.
Obviously I can't answer your question because I'm not as far along in the process as you are. But I feel your pain! Unfortunately I don't think there is a whole lot that you can do to keep the ear infections from happening. I've heard that using the nose sucker helps, but DD won't stay still long enough to let me do it.
DD got her first set of tubes after what some think of as cold and flu season in april 2007, then she got her second set in april 2008, the second set came out by christmas so we had to get her 3rd set dec 2008. They fell out by june and the doctor said lets wait it out. So after 3 rounds of tubes we have been without tubes since June with no ear infections. Anymore infections and DD will get a perminate tube in her right ear (3 years it stays in min) and her adnoids(sp?) out. I have my fingers crossed that we are over needing tubes.
I would definately keep an eye on the ear without a tube. My daughter always got infections and it resulted in her eardrum rupturing. It happened so much she has some hearing lost in her right ear now. If the doctors suggest tubes again I would definately do it.
