Thoughts on the name Caelan

DH is set on calling our future son CAL someday. We were spitballing names and I didn't like Calvin, Caleb, or Callum and we stumbled across Caelan (other spellings were Callen, Kallan so I'm assuming it's pronounced like those) we liked that the ae spelling was of Scottish decent because DH is Scottish and Norweigan.

We've had alot of mixed reviews though because on paper people assume it sounds like Caylen.

 Thoughts?

Re: Thoughts on the name Caelan

  • In my head, I hear the "ae" sound as Cay- Len.

  • I would assume it was pronounced Cay-len, also.

  • I assumed the name was pronounced Kay-len. I know someone who just named their son Cal, not short for anything, just Cal.

  • I would assume it was Cay- len.

  • I just can't bring myself to name a baby Cal. There just aren't many cal- names out there.

  • I would assume Kay-lynn, and I would assume girl. Even pronounced Callin, I would assume a girl.

What about something like McAllister? A little bit of a stretch but not totally. I love the name Callum, personally.

  • What about the name Cale?

  • It reads like Kay-Lynn to me. A girl's name. I would also suggest Cale. That is on our list as a MN and DH loves it.
  • The only reason I don't like Callum is because how it flows with our last name. LN is only 4 letters long and starts with a U.

  • Baby Name Wizard suggests Caleb and Calder as names "related" to Cal. I don't pronounce either of them Cal, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Oops! Just saw you don't like Caleb either, sorry....

  • Sorry but I totally expected to see a post on a girl.
  • I'd assume it was pronounced cay-len as well.  You've ruled out all the names I would think would result in a "Cal" nickname.  Sorry.

  • I know, it really wasn't a big deal to me, more DH. My favorite name happens to be Jack, has been since I got pregnant with my daughter in December of 06. He's starting to warm up to it now so we'll see. Thanks for the input though!

  • Meh, NMS.  I like Callum.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • I've seen it spelled Calan, which would make it less likely to be thought of as Kay-lin.

  • I really like Callister
  • I know a Caelan...it's pronounced Kay-lin and I've always thought it was a tad feminine.
  • I thought it was pronounced kay-lin, which reminded me of a GIRL I went to elementary with.?

  • I think this name has a feminine sound to it. I don't like it.

If I were set on Cal as a nn, I'd go w/ Calvin or Caleb. Maybe even Callahan.

  • Caelan is a Gaelic name and it is def. pronounced Cay-lin.  It is a boy's name, but is becoming popular for girls.

  • I like it and my DH likes it too. We were just talking about this last night!

However, like a few people said, my concern was that it sounds a bit like a girl's name.

  • I like it but it is pronounced Kay-len as far as I know which is also how many girls with some variation of the name Cailin spell it. The spelling to me tells me its Gaelic and a boys name but that doesn't mean it won't be confusing...if you are calling him Cal, I think it would be a non issue.

This, sounds like Cay-len.. but i like it

  • If we have a girl we are going to name her Kaylin.  I thought Caelan if a boy (both pronounced the same) but DH says to feminine.

  • My bosses son is names Caelan, and they pronounce it like Kay-lan. I like it. I also like Callan, though.
