to bumper or not to bumper???

I'm nervous about SIDS, but I see that almost everyone has bumpers in their pics.  Can you tell me what you're doing and why?  Thanks!

Re: to bumper or not to bumper???

  • No bumper.

Looks cute but not worth the risk to me. Yes, it keeps the paci in the crib when they throw it, but if LO moves around when sleeping the way I do I don't want her to get caught in the bumper.

  • No bumper- the much higher risk of SIDS is not worth it. I think some people get the bumper because it's in a set pr because its cute but don't necessarily use it once LO comes, particularly if they use a bassinet for the first weeks. I least I hope that's true.  Have you heard of the wedge bumper? I can't remember what it's actually called but it might be worth checking out. then it has a barrier to stop pacis falling out and legs sticking out but it doesn't restrict airflow and apparently is a material that can't really suction to LO's mouth like cloth.
  • No bumper. I'll pick Nuks up off the floor and have an incomplete nursery set all day long to not increase the risk of SIDS.

FYI, I read that having a fan near the crib to circulate air and keep LO from re-breathing CO2 can decrease SIDS risk, too!!

  • True Story ~ One of my BFFs had a bumper in her 2nd babies crib. She heard him crying in the middle of the night and then it abruptly stopped.... she went into the room to find her LO under the bumper. If she had not gone into the room when she did he would not be here today.

Before this had happened, I had fully intended on having a bumper in my (one day) LOs crib..... but now there is no way that I will risk the safety for the "look" of the nursery.

Here is a link to the COZY WEDGE that pp was discussing. My friend purchased this to replace her bumper... it got an A in Baby Bargains.

  • I'm putting mine in to take pics and admire until she comes...then it will get the boot!

  • We're using a bumper but LO won't be sleeping in his crib for the first few months, he'll be in the Pack N Play in our room. We're using the bumpers for only decoration really. We did register for breathable bumpers just in case we change our mind and he does sleep in his crib.
  • We kept our in the crib while DS was in a bassinet, then we removed it when we moved him to his crib and we put in a breathable bumper instead.
  • Thanks, everyone!

  • We chose not to buy a bedding set for this very reason! Both the quilt and the bumper are a waste. So we bought sheets and a breathable mesh bumper separtely.

  • Bumper.   The baby will be in our room for the first several months, not in a crib anyway.

I also want to just put this information out there...In the last 20 years, there have been been 27 bumper related deaths.  Only 13 of those were from suffocation.  The others were from strangulation from ties, or being wedged with another object.  There are about 4 million babies born in the US each year.  That would be 80 million babies in 20 years, and only 13 bumper suffocation deaths.  I can't find a calculator around right now that will even compute that small of a percentage.  The likelihood of something happening due to the bumper is slim to none.  There's also no studies to prove any link to SIDS...It's just a theory.  SIDS is a big mystery.

Obviously, it's better to err on the side of caution, and there's nothing wrong with not using a bumper.  It's a very important decision each parent should make but there's a whole lotta hype, and very little to back it up.  I just think it's important to research any topic, and then form a decision.

  • i bought one and only used it for the 1st week. if i were you, i would save my money. just a thought - in addition to the SIDS risk, when your LO soaks through his/her diaper.clothes, etc. onto the sheet, it's a real PITA to have to move the bumper up to get the sheet off.
  • We're going to use the bumper. I've heard far more stories about babies getting their arms and legs twisted and trapped in the rails. If we find that LO likes to push his/her face up against the bumper, we may get a breathable one.

  • we took the bumper off the bed once dd started moving around (we had it on when she was a month or two old) but she moves  A LOT and knocks her head HARD against the crib, so we put it back up.

I also put stuffed anmals in her bed and she uses them as pillows, so i am giving her a baby  pillow soon.  She's fine.

oh, and she would stick her arm through the crib slats and get it stuck.  we had a few close calls and she had a few bruises on her arm because of it.

  • We are using the bumper until he can pull himself up. We decided that he won't be moving much when he is little and once he is moving he will be able to move himself away from the bumper.

  • We used a bumper with DS and not to keep pacifiers in the crib.  He never took to one.  I think it's a personal choice.  We are going to use one with this baby as well.
