Experienced Moms...2 cribs needed? 16 months and newborn-

I know it is different with each child but should I PLAN on purchasing a 2nd crib?  DD will be 16 months when this baby is born.  Right now her room is downstairs but when the new baby gets here, she will be going upstairs to her new bedroom.  I have to get her room ready before the baby gets here and I don't know what to do...I really think I need another crib.  Friends who are not in my situation tell me not to buy another crib but from real life experience, what did you do?

Oh yeah...she will be upstairs with her 2 older sisters, not alone...not that, that matters.

  • DS1 is 20 months and I don't feel like he's really even close to being ready for a toddler bed yet.  DS2 has been in a bassinet in our room but will be moving to his crib in the next few months.

So for us, yes 2 cribs is needed.

  • Mine are 17 months apart and we didn't get another crib.  Our crib turns into a toddler bed so we transitioned DD to that at around 15-16 months (she did GREAT) and then when DS arrived he was in our room...well actually still is, but naps in the crib...and we have DD in a twin bed.  She's done great in the twin hasn't fallen out once and we don't even have railings on it.  We put a baby gate in front of her door so she can't wander the house IF she were to wake up in the middle of the night, but she hasn't yet so it's really not a big deal!

    Can't echo this enough.

It was so nice to know EXACTLY where the toddler was when tied down nursing the baby in the other room.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I'm going to wait and see, but I'm definitely not buying one before #2 is born. ?DS slept in the PNP in our room for 4.5 months and I really only moved him because he was too big for the bassinet part of the PNP and it seemed easier to put him in his crib than in the bottom part of the PNP. ?We're going to wait and see how it goes with DD, and how ready DS seems for a bed when she gets to be 4-5 months (DS will be 17 months older). ?DS is already a major climber and I don't doubt that he'll be escaping the crib by that time.

  • We bought another crib for DD#2 and our girls are 19 months apart.  DD#1 slept wonderful in her crib until she was 2y4m when she then began 'crib jumping' and it all went south for her from then on out :/  Both girls have cribs that convert to toddler then full size so we knew we'd use them longer than your usual crib. I'd say if you can afford it buy another one and enjoy the confinment of the crib :))))
  • My kiddos are 17 months apart pretty much on the dot.. and we moved DS#1 to a twin bed in his new room 2 months before the baby was born.. and he did great.. he loved it.. we had rails up and we would shut the door he couldn't get out so i wasn't worried.. and i wasn't worried about his safety as i would hear him if he was awake.. i personally feel it is kind of pointless to buy another crib when they will need a bigger bed later and a crib they grow out of.. if you want to do a crib is there anyway you could borrow one instead of buying another one??

Same here. Plan on buying another crib =)

  • my ds will be aboput 17 - 18 months at the time DC #2 is born and even though we plan to keep newborn in the bassinet for at least 4 months or till he/she rolls I want to try and keep DS in his crib as long as possible. I'd rather sleep safely knowing he's confined in his crib and can only get out when I get him. If he's climbing out of the crib by then - I will transition it to the toddler bed but regardless will get another transitional crib as well.
  • I haven't had experience yet, but we've decided to keep DS in his crib after DD comes. He'll be 22 months but is super active and I think the crib is still the safest place for him. We bought a second crib for DD, which I was opposed to at first, but buying a crib for DD or a toddler bed for DS seemed like "6 of one, half dozen of the other" in the end. And both cribs are convertible so now we have 2 cribs but also 2 toddler beds (for when they both need one).

  • Personally I'd transition to a bed earlier. Unless your crib is a convertible and you want to be able to use it for the toddler then maybe a second crib is worth it.

Otherwise, the way I'd avoid buying a second, is to put the new baby in a bassinet/co-sleeper/pnp in your room and crib in toddlers room until she's a bit older and more ready for a proper bed and then do the switch and put baby in the crib.

  • i havent gone through it yet, but we are borrowing  a portacrib--like a mini crib --  from my sister. the new baby will be in our room for 3 months and then i have the option of putting him/er in the new room with the mini crib. my sister has bedding for it already, and it could be fine until about a year, that way Finn will be about 2.5 if I wanted to wait that long to move to a big bed. I plan on trying the toddler rail on his crib around 2 and see how it goes. GL!

We bought a second crib. Mine will only be 14m apart, but DS2 will be in the PNP in our room for 2-3 months.

We either would have had to buy a toddler bed for DS1 and use the existing crib for DS2 or buy a crib for DS2 and use the existing crib (converted) for DS1.

In the end, we only would have saved maybe $50 by buying DS1 a toddler bed instead of buying DS2 a crib. To me, I was glad to just have a decision made about it so I don't have to worry about it when I have a 16mo and a 2mo, you know?

We got the Graco Lauren crib for both of them. It converts, so we'll just stick with that. And then we get to keep DS1 contained for as long as possible. I just know he's not going to be one to stay in his bed and go to sleep, you know?

  • I did not do a bassinet for either one of my kids. We dont have the space. But, we did have  both of our little ones in the crib the night we came home. it was easier and less transitioning to do.
  • DS1 was 16.5 months when DS2 arrived and was no where ready for a toddler bed.  DS1 is a very active little boy and would never stay in a toddler bed.  We bought a second crib that turns into a full size bed when he is ready.

I never have to worry about DS1 in the middle of the night and didn't have to stress out  trying to transition him to a full size bed while taking care of a newborn.  You will have your hands full when the new baby arrives!

  • I haven't gone through this yet, but my little guys will be 16 months apart also.  We bought a new crib for DS#2.  I think DS#1 will still need to be in a crib when his brother arrives and we got a great deal on a new crib for #2 (clearance at target so it was less than $100).   Both boys will have cribs that will convert to toddler beds and then full size beds so we can move them when they are ready.
  • We're getting 2 more cribs. I'm gonig to keep DD in her crib as long as possible.

  • My son is almost 2 years old, and I don't have any plans on moving him out of his crib.  However, our crib converts to a toddler bed, and then into a full size bed, so we plan on it being his for a long time anyway.  So for us, yes, we will be buying a 2nd crib.  But, we also plan on the newborn to sleep in the PnP in our bedroom for quite some time, so we are not purchasing the 2nd crib until we need it.
